1. Fun with 3D printing. Consider the following integrals, which arose in a recent design
of an experiment involving 3D printed objects. The first integral I1 is given by:
ZZ
I1 = g(x, y) dR;
Ω1
q
g(x, y) = x2 + (y − a)2 − a2 and Ω1 is the region defined by the inequalities
x2 + y 2 ≤ (3a)2 and x2 + (y − a)2 ≥ a2 , with a > 0. The second integral I2 is given by:
Z πZ π
sin x
I2 = dxdy.
0 y x
(a) Sketch Ω1 ; identify the coordinates of any points of intersection with the y axes.
(b) Using vertical strips, express I1 as a sum of four double integrals with respect to y
first. Do not evaluate the integrals.
(c) Discuss briefly the possible alternative evaluation of I1 as a difference of double
integrals over two simple regions, each of which has no hole.
(d) Evaluate I2 by changing the order of integration. Check your answer for I2 using
MATLAB.
3. Consider the following vector field F(x, y, z) = (2xz + y 2 )i + 2xyj + (x2 + 3z 2 )k.
(a) Show that F(x, y, z) is conservative. Find a scalar function φ such that F = ∇φ.
(b) Determine the work done by F to move the particle along the curve C:
x = t2 , y = t + 1, z = 2t − 1, 0 ≤ t ≤ 1.
Note:
• Full working must be shown in your analytical solutions. For the questions involving MAT-
LAB, include a printout of all MATLAB code and outputs. This must be printed from within
MATLAB, or must be a screen shot showing your work and the MATLAB Command window
heading. You must include your name and student number in a comment in your code, other-
wise the code will not be marked.
