Course Outline: Performance Management and Appraisal

SEMESTER: 6

1. DESCRIPTION OF ACADEMIC CONTENT:

This course examines the importance of an effective performance management and


appraisal in helping organizations define and achieve short and long term goals. It
explains and reinforces the concept that performance management is not a one-time
supervisory event, but an ongoing process of planning, facilitating, assessing, and
improving individual and organizational performance. In addition, the course
emphasizes the importance of measuring the effectiveness of human resource activities
that are designed to enhance individual and organizational performance.
In this regard Performance Management by Herman Aguinis (Second
Ed)/Performance management by James W. Smither and the book performance
management and appraisal by T.V Rao; would be followed for the conceptual
understanding of Performance Management Systems and to grasp the tools for
measuring performance. Students may also consult: www.quora.com to understand the
practical implementation of performance management.

2. TEACHING METHODOLOGY:

 For a better learning experience, the student’s would have a combination of


assignments (Collecting information about PMS at various companies,
development of BARS), Case studies, Presentations and on the spot discussions
to participate in.
 As per the efficiency and requirement of today, the instructor would encourage
an email communication, specifically for the delivery of the course content,
material and case studies. The students would be expected to collect and read
the material before taking every class.

3. CLASS DISCIPLINE:

 The class would be conducted under the strict observance of etiquettes. In which
late arrival and early departure be strongly discouraged and the student will be
considered as ABSENT. Yet, early departure can be compensated under special
emergency circumstances as per rules of institute.
