Mrs. Ash’s 1st Grade Class

Subject Area Snapshot

Reading: Readers pay attention to characters’ feelings from the beginning to the end of stories
Readers are stop to think about the what their character is feeling at every part of the story. Readers com-
pare the feelings of different characters by talking with partners. Readers notice a character’s feelings
change and ask, “Did this character learn something here?”
Writing: Writers revise and edit to make their pieces more effective.
Writers improve their pieces by sharing with their writing partners. Writers check for correct capitalization
and punctuation.
Math: Time and Fractions
Mathematicians learned time to the hour and half hour. We also worked on the fraction 1/2. Next week we will
finish up with 1/4 and start a new unit of study.
Science: Pebbles, Sand, and Silt
Scientists learned about pebbles, gravel, and sand. They screened river rocks to sort the rocks into these
three categories. Then we did a cool experiment where we put sand and water in a vial, thinking sand was the
smallest form of rocks, and we discovered silt!!!

Happy Birthday!
