Connectors

What are ‘connectors’?

Connectors are words and


phrases which are used to link
clauses and sentences.
Conjunctions

•  A conjunction connects two


clauses in the same sentence.
I  have  been  watching  television  since  I  got  
home  at  six  o’clock.  
Adverbial Phrases

•  Can connect a sentence with


another sentence.
I  got  home  at  six  o’clock.  Since  then,  I  have  
been  watching  television.

•  Can connect a sentence with the


whole text.
...  And  then  I  went  to  bed.  All  in  all,  I  had  a  
very  boring  evening.

•  Can signal the writer’s attitude to


what they are saying.

Sentence connectors are used to link
one sentence with a previous
sentence or sentences.

sentences. Coordination gives equal attention
to two items.

Subordinating Conjunctions
Subordinating conjunctions are used to join
independent clauses to make complex sentences.
Subordination gives less attention to one idea
so that the other has emphasis.
They are:
after, although, as, as if, because, before, even
if, even though, if, if only, rather than, since,
that, though, unless, until, when, where,
whereas, wherever, whether, which, and while.
