Certain records in CD and CS form received 5-digit major-label catalog numbers in addition to their 3-digit OLE
numbers. These numbers in turn changed as we reissued these records through our new major-label partners.
This document has now been updated with all the major-label catalog numbers that we are aware of. Except in
rare instances where noted, the OLE number was also printed on the artwork and disc along with the major-label
number. Most cassettes were deleted when major-label deals ended, so were not reassigned pure OLE numbers
in future runs.
Prior to 1996 most full-length albums were sent to press etc. prior to release as advance cassettes. Some were
hand-dubbed; by 1993-96 they were produced for us by Atlantic and usually had generic black and white inlays.
We do not have catalog number information on these, if they even had such numbers.
From early 1996 onward, all full-album releases have been manufactured as advance CDs. These have unique
artwork differing from the commercial CD, but almost always with just an inlay, no booklet. The catalog number
is identical to the catalog number for the CD, with the suffix "V" for adVance, hence OLE-683-2V for Mission of
Burma -- The Obliterati advance CDs. Advance CDs are generally made 3 months prior to release.
NOTE ON BARCODES
13-digit UPCs (barcodes) can be calculated for any Matador release from the catalog number, including the 1200
and 9000 series (but not the ELO series, the Matador/Atlantic and Matador/Capitol releases, and not the Atlantic
and Warners PRCDs), by using the following formula:
7448610 + 3-digit catalog no. + format code + check digit (for 4-digit catalog numbers, simply start with
744861):
For example, OLE-683-2 Mission Of Burma -- The Obliterati will be 74486106832 + check digit. This means you
can look at any Matador UPC and figure out what the catalog number and barcode are. If you know your OLE #s
really well, you can figure out the release too.
To calculate the check digit, take the sum of the UPC digits in the odd-numbered places and multiply by 3. Set
this number aside. Now take the sum of the UPC digits in the even-numbered places. Add this to the number you
previously set aside. Whatever number takes you to the next multiple of 10 is the check digit; for example, if the
sum of the two numbers is 68, then the check digit is 2. If the sum of the numbers is a multiple of 10 itself, then
the check digit is 0.
In the example above, the Mission Of Burma album, you take the digits in the odd numbered spots (1,3,5 etc.)
and add them: 7+4+6+0+8+2 = 27. Multiply that by 3, yielding 81, and set aside. Now add the digits in the
even numbered spots (2,4,6 etc.) and add them: 4+8+1+6+3=22.
Now add 22 to the number you set aside, which was 81, and the total is 103. The number required to get to the
next multiple of 10 (110) is 7, so 7 is the check digit, and the full barcode for the Mission Of Burma CD is
744861068327. Barcodes for promos and advances should have P or V added to the end as applicable.
(This UPC calculation method works on most products. If you're stuck in the bathroom without something to
read, you'll find you can easily calculate check digits on Ajax, toilet paper rolls, aspirin bottles etc.)
