Name of the company: Big Bazaar (Parent company – Future group)

Big Bazaar is Indian retail chain which was founded by Mr. Kishore Biyani in 2001 under the parent
organization, Future Group. The first store was opened in Kolkata. It is one of the country’s oldest
supermarket chain with more than 250 stores present in 118 towns and cities across the country.

The Future Retail, which is a flagship company of Future Group, operates 738 retail stores in 221
cities and cater demand to around 330 million customers every year. The retail stores include Big
Bazaar, easyday, e-zone, fashion Big Bazaar (fbb), Food Bazaar, Foodhall, and Home Town.

Big Bazaar runs on super market format and combines the “see-touch-feel” of Indian bazars with
choice and convenience of a modern retail. According to consumer poll by Nielsen and the economic
times, it was adjudged among the top five most trusted brands in the service sector in India.

Name of the sector: Retail Sector

The Retail sector is the penultimate point in the value chain where the end consumer buys the
product for his or her consumption. Hence it comprises of all kinds of shops from kirana stores,
kiosks, small retailers, grocery stores to hypermarkets and superstores. The Indian retail market has
been unorganized since a long time with tradition of self - employment and local business which is
source of majority of revenue.

The Indian retail sector accounts for about 10 percent of country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
Due to high income growth, urbanization and dynamic demands of customer, this sector is expected
to touch $ 1 trillion by 2020.

With the latest technology and insights, we are entering into the world of supermarkets, superstores
and hypermarkets. These are large retail establishments consisting of a variety of stores. The
customer can purchase all the goods like grocery, food, apparel, home furnishings, electronics,
sports goods, accessories etc. that he requires in his daily life. Some of these establishments may
also provide with other services like beauty – parlours, hair salons, eyeglass stores, photo-studios
etc.

Today most of the supermarkets have started expanding their product mix and hence have taken the
form of hypermarket. The major players in India are Big Bazaar, Hypercity, D Mart, Reliance Fresh,
Spencer’s, More etc.

Objectives of Research:

The main purpose of the research is to find out what makes Big Bazaar stand out among its
competitors which are expanding on a day to day basis. The report aims to study the effect of
expanding global retail giants on India like Walmart, Tesco etc.

The report also aims at knowing the satisfaction level of Big Bazaar customers and their awareness
about the products and services available.

The objective of this research is to find out how the company is using its customer data and
information capabilities to improve and predict customer behaviour pattern.
Apart from the challenge of expensive and lack of retail space, it is interesting to find out how the
company is planning to compete against increasing online grocery stores (E – grocery).
