Our result against Portadown at Shamrock Park on December 17 was a real confidence-booster for the holiday programme, but we have got to ensure that the good work in this game is not undone by the loss of vital points today and in the remaining holiday games with Ards and Newry Town. We have had a very good record against Glentoran over recent years and it is essential that we _ have another winning performance this afternoon. Blues/Glens games rarely go to form and it is the team which gets the break in the opening half hour which goes on to triumph. Boxing Day fixtures 4 between the teams always whet the appetites of fans from the two clubs and we would appeal to them all by their behaviour to make this game what it traditionally is - the best advertisement of _ the season for Irish League football. Linfield Swifts contested the Steel and Sons Cup Final on Saturday and it will be hoped that they and the senior team today will make ita very happy Christmas for us all at Windsor Park. © Linfield supporters are the most generous in the Irish League. This season already the organised supporters’ clubs have directly donated £10,150 to the parent club ~a magnificent amount. {yuna aa Recent donations include £2,000 from First Ballyclare L.S.C.; £300 from Shankill L.S.C. and £300 from Sovereign L.S.c. @ We are pleased to welcome the players, officials and supporters of Glentoran Football Club to Windsor Park today for the second ‘Big Two’ game of the season. In August, Linfield defeated the Glens 1-0 in an Ulster Cup game at the Oval with a goal from Gary Peebles, Today's encounter has all the ingredients for a classic and the expected big holiday crowd should keep the players on their toes. As there are a number of disabled field supporters (and we are delighted to see them at ‘The Park’), the Management Committee hope to make their attendance a little bit easier by providing some reserved car parking places just by the main entrance gate to Windsor Park. The spaces have been marked off by yellow lines, and we would ask other drivers to respect them. It means a lot to some of the disabled if they do not have to make their way to the disabled section or to the Stands without having to cope with a distance. from) outside the ground. We hope th handicapped supporters will avail of this facility, and that they will find it helpful. A Disabled Car Sticker must be displayed. A Happy and Prosperous New Year to all ‘Look at Lintield’ readers! Ballymena United Distillery Glenavon.. Larne... Omagh Town .. Coleraine Ards . Cliftonville Newry Town Portadown. Carrick Rangers Ballyclare Comrades. Ti«¥* The win against Portadown on December 17 was a marvellous result for us, but it was fully deserved and it keeps us firmly in the Championship race. The lads showed a lot of character in a game that was always going to be tough and it sets us up nicely for the holiday programme. 1 was also pleased with the way we played against Coleraine in the League and Ards in the Co. Antrim Shield. We may not have got anything from the Coleraine game, but the commitment was there and it was also much in evidence against Ards when we came back from a 3-1 deficit to win 4-3. Today is the big one we all look forward to and want to win. Glentoran may be going through a lean patch right now and have not beaten us for several years, but you can be sure they will raise their game for this match and if we are to win we must play to top form. ‘Big Two’ encounters are the most appealing games in Irish League soccer, the fans enjoy watching the them and the players love unique atmosphere. Three more points, followed up by wins against Ards on Saturday and Newry Town next Monday, would keep us very much in the frame for the run-in to the title. lam reasonably happy with our Bass Irish Cup draw against Crusaders - the important thing is we are playing at home. Of course, it is all down to what we do on the day. Wesley Lamont will not be available until mid-January with his back injury, but we have taken Precautions by signing Belgian goalkeeper Dominique Wouters on a month’s loan. Dessie Gorman is troubled with hamstring, while John. Easton has knee problems and | am hopeful both will be fit for today. Jeff Spiers is available for selection after a one-game lay-off through suspension. May Iclose by wishing all our supporters a very prosperous New year. The Shankill Road man joined the Blues in 1961 — his timing was perfect as the team reached probably their finest hour, taking the Irish League by storm and lifting seven trophies. When it comes to characters, Andrews must rank up the list. He spent 11 happy years with the Blues and, in that time, he became a cult figure among the fans. His all-action, tough tackling style went down a treat with the supporters. “But | had a great grounding,” insists Isaac. “I came into a team as an 18-year old that featured seven or eight international players and they just ushered me along. “It was an all-star line-up . . . Bobby Irvine, Sammy Hatton, Tommy Dickson, Billy Ferguson, Hubert Barr, Bobby Braithwaite. They all had represented their country and all of a sudden | was rubbing shoulders with them.” “When Isee the fees that players are being transferred for these days, how much would you pay for players of that calibre?” asks Isaac. Indeed, the recent spate of imports from Scotland, England and the Republic will do the local game no favours, he argues. “read somewhere recently that here are around 35 ‘foreign’ players playing in the Irish League. What chance has any young lad of making it as teams are all too eager to bring in outsiders,” asks Isaac? “Transfer fees and wages have almost got out of hand. When I played for Linfield | earned around £6 — but truthfully, | would have pulled on a jersey for nothing!” Isaac began his career with the 55th Old Boys - the Nelson Memorial on the Shankill Road. He signed for the Whites, but was off to Manchester United after only a matter of weeks. “lstayed one month at Old Trafford and then returned home . . . | was very homesick,” says Isaac, who is into his 31st year as an employee of Northern Telecom, former STC. “Icame home rejoined the Whites, but Matt Busby brought me back to United. They had Northern Ireland lads over there — Jimmy Nicholson, Sammy McMillan and Ronnie Briggs, the big goalkeeper. But again | stayed only four weeks and on my return, George Eastham gave me a 12- month contract at Grosvenor Park. The following year | joined Linfield, along with Phil Scott, who is a good friend. Coming from the Shankill, it was a dream come true.” Highlights Indeed, Isaac Andrews had to think long and hard of singling out the highlights of a glittering 11-year stint. “There were so many high points,” he recalls.” The seven trophies . . . playing in Europe, big matches against Glentoran, it was brilliant. “| still have great memories from the games against Manchester City in the European Cup Winners’ Cup. “We held them for 89 minutes at Maine Road, Colin Bell scored in the last minute. | missed the last five minutes after clashing with Glyn Pardoe. | needed five stitches ina bad cut. “In the second leg at Windsor, 20,000 were packed in, there was a great atmosphere. We beat them 2-1, but went out on away goals. “Billy Bingham was manager at that time, and | must say he was the most impressive of the bosses | was under with Linfield. He came from managing a team in England and that certainly rubbed off on us.” Andrews eventually signed for Glenavon, then moved into ‘B’ Division s6écer with Dundela. And he was an instant success in his first venture into coaching as he and Eric Halliday guided Shorts to a Christmas moming Steel and Sons Cup victory, after only six months in the job. “After that | went to Chimney Corner, then H&W Welders. We actually drew Linfield in the Irish Cup one year. But I'm not involved with a club anymore. “l watch the Blues an odd time and | plan to go to the match against Glentoran over Christmas,” adds Isaac. No doubt, he will be given a big welcome at ‘The Park’. 400th game for Alan? Linfield captain Alan Dornan is set to make his 400th senior appearance for Linfield today. Alan, coming to the end of a well deserved testimonial at the club, has enjoyed an illustrous playing record at ‘The Park’. Since Glentoran's last visit to play Linfield at Windsor the team has changed radically with Cassidy realising after just a short time in charge that the team he had inherited were drastically lacking in certain aspects. Measures taken to re-dress the balance included the signing of Northern Ireland under-21 goalkeeper Declan Devine; Derry City midfielder Donal O'Brien and Portadown striker Trevor Smith. Eddie Cunnington and Dave Martindale were brought ‘from Scotland and England respectively to bolster the midfield. Another close-season acquisition was Roddy McDowell who returned to his native Londonderry having spent four years at Ayresome Park with Middlesborough. Despite having lifted his first trophy, the TNT Gold Cup Tommy Cassidy remains all too aware of the fact that the heat is on with regards membership in the new Premier League, First Division or whatever. Not only did Tommy inherit a team in dire need of overhaul he also inherited an unimpressive ninth position in last season's placings. Glentoran’s most recent encounter with the Blues was by far the closest, most competitive meeting of the two Belfast sides for several seasons. Tommy Cassidy This afternoon provides Cassidy and his side with the opportunity of redressing this season's balance and also affords Donal O’Brien, Trevor Smith, Declan Devine and Eddie Cunnington their first taste of what continues to be one of the highlights of the season — the Boxing Day pairing of the Glens and the Blues. The form book hasn't flew out of too many windows over the last few years, but Glentoran are as eager to emerge victorious this afternoon. With the exorcism of that particular ghost out of the way the field is now clear for the Glens to go full out to book a place in the top flight. Linfield are only one of the obstacles along the way and with every club fighting tooth and nail for every point expect this afternoon's clash to be of classic proportions. Here’s hoping for a good one. Dateline: Saturday, December 23, 1944 “Blues Resounding Victory” “Four goals for Smyth at Windsor Park” Linfield 9, Glentoran 2. At Windsor Park today, before a fair sized crowd, Linfield routed Glentoran. The Glens began well and might have taken an early lead through Mackay, but he shot too hastily from a pass by Johnny Deakin, thereafter the Blues dominated the exchanges. Sammy McCrory opened for the Blues after eight minutes, Norman Lockhart added another and Sammy Smyth made it 3-0 after 18 mins, in 22 minutes it was 4-0, Smyth again the scorer, after clever approach work Davy Cochrane scored the Blues fifth goal of the first-half with a dazzling piece of skill, beating the Glens defence contemptuously, _ before flicking the ball to the net for his first of the game. Half-time: Linfield 5 Glentoran 0. After the restart the Glens made some positional changes to try and stem the Blues attack, and indeed Jim Lavery reduced the deficit and Bertie Wright added a penalty to leave the score 5-2. The Blues picked up from there and Davy Cochrane with consumate ease added a sixth, Sammy Smyth added a seventh (and his hat-trick) before Cochrane completed his own hat-trick with goal No. 8. Late in the game Sammy Smyth completed his own tally by adding No. 9, this completed a remarkable day for the Blues and left the Glens a shattered and well beaten side.
