WORK METHOD STATEMENT

FOR
REINFORCED CONCRETE RETAINING WALL

EQUIPMENT

- The following machinery and manpower are proposed to be used for reinforced
concrete retaining wall work.
(1) Excavator or backhoe - 1 nos.
(2) Concrete mixer - 1 nos.
(3) Submersible pump - 1 nos.
(4) Engine vibrator poker - 2 nos.
(5) Site foreman - 1
(6) Carpenter - 6
(7) Bar bender - 8
(8) Concretor - 5

EXCAVATION

- Prior to commencement of works, the site will be surveyed to determine the exact
location, extent of walls and excavation if any.
- All excavation for reinforced concrete retaining wall shall be carried out to firm
ground and to the depth of excavation shall be as indicated in the drawings.
- The open cut shall have a minimum of 500 mm working space on both side.
- Excavation works shall be done using one unit of backhoe or excavator.
- Manual labour will be used to trim the bottom of the excavation.
- Compaction to achieve a suitable working platform will be executed by way of a
plate compactor or one tonne roller compactor.
- A batch of 15 N/mm2 lean concrete shall be poured at the working platform and
shall be casted accurately to the lines and levels required.
- After lean concrete footing has been properly set, reinforcement of steel bars for
base slab will be arranged.
- Dewatering in case of rain will be achieved by several 4” submersible pumps
situated in sumps at the corner of the project area.

REINFORCEMENT

- Cutting and bending of rebars will be done on site in the bar fabrication yard and
all reinforcement shall be bend as shown on the construction drawings.
- Installation of rebars will be done accordingly to approved drawings to ensure that
the correct bars (bars diameter and type of reinforcement) are fixed in the
locations, with lap length and bar spacing as shown on the drawing.
- Installation of steel bars shall be carried out in two steps which are:-
(i) Installation of rebar for the base slab
(ii) Installation of rebar for the wall after base slab concrete is properly set
- Cutting and bending of rebar shall be done properly as the top finish level of R.C.
retaining wall are controlled by gradient on upper ground level, while the width of
the base slab is controlled by the profile as indicated in the drawing.
- A 50 mm diameter PVC weephole will be install at every 3000 mm centre to
centre horizontally and 2000 mm centre to centre vertically.
- Every 50 mm PVC weephole shall be wrap with geotextile filter cloth to ensure no
earth soil material passing through the R.C. retaining wall.

FORMWORK

- Conventional formwork shall be used.

- Material for formwork will be obtained from local suppliers.
- Formwork to the exposed surface of the surrounding walls will be made of new,
12 mm sound plywood and will be replaced as often as necessary to ensure an
acceptable finish to the concrete surface.
- Strutting and walers shall be of minimum 50 mm x 125 mm timber.
- Before installation, formwork shall be spray with oil or equivalent to ensure good
concrete surface.
- All formwork shall fixed to each other to ensure no gap appear and will be
support with 2” x 4” timber to ensure no formwork bulging during concreting.
- Stripping of formwork shall be done after the concrete achieve with the strength
requirement as stated in the drawing or approval from the Engineer.

CONCRETE WORKS

- Concrete grade for R.C. retaining wall shall be of grade 30 N/mm2 and supplier
for concrete will be Supermix Concrete or C.I. Readymix Concrete.
- First casting for R.C. retaining wall shall be done with base slab for about 10 m
length and followed by the wall for about 5 m length. This method will be
repeated accordingly.
- Every construction joint shall be installed with approved rubber water stop as
indicate in the drawings or depending on site condition with approval from the
Engineer.
- Concrete will be delivered to site by mixer trucks and placed directly where
possible and with the used of a mobile crane with no less than 20 tonnes and
bucket where necessary.
- For areas where access is good, the concrete shall be discharged direct with less
than 1.5 m high. Conventional chute will be used in direct discharged.
- Slump shall be determined at each truck and concrete cubes of 9 nos shall be taken
at the interval of 20 m3.
- Concrete will be compacted with petrol engine vibrating pokers.
- Size of poker heads will vary according to access through the reinforcement but
normally 50 mm poker heads will be used and no cold joint will be allowed to
happen.
- During concreting, a sufficient nos. of vibrator units shall be kept on stand-by at
all times to ensure that compaction is not compromised due to mechanical
breakdown.
- Before backfilling can be conducted, internal wall of R.C. retaining wall shall be
painted with approved coat bituminous.
- Backfilling in layers for about 300 mm will be carried out closely behind the
concrete wall to ensure good campaction.
- At each level the backfill of suitable material will be properly leveled and
compacted.
CURING

- Curing works will be done using curing compound, Concure P.

- The curing compound will be sprayed to the exposed surface of the newly
concrete structure, care being taken to ensure complete coverage.
- Curing compound will be applied within 30 minutes to one hour where condition
of hot sun or dry winds prevail.
- For vertical surfaces, the curing compound will be applied immediately after the
formwork has been removed.
