The performances over the past week in reaching the Nationwide Irish Cup final with a win over Bangor and the Setanta Sports Cup semi-final with a highly memorable 6-0 win over old rivals Glentoran has caused great excitement and expectation at ‘The Park’. The incredible results’ sequence is complemented by the winning of the Carnegie Irish Premier League, the CIS Insurance League Cup and the Crest Team Wear Co. Antrim Shield. The Irish and Setanta Cups are firmly in our sights and what an achievement it would be if we ended with five trophies for the season. Today, supporters will get the chance to acclaim their heroes when the Premier League trophy (Gibson Cup) will be handed over along with the players’ medals and a gala day is planned for all who turn up. Of course, the most important thing today will be winning another three League points against Lisburn Distillery to maintain our unbeaten record over 50 games. This season's success has been achieved through a lot of hard work by the players, manager and coaches and supporters played their part with continued faithful backing at every game. Supporters are reminded that Linfield’s Setanta Sports Cup semi-final tie with Drogheda United (kick-off 8 p.m.) at Windsor Park on Tuesday night is all- ticket, with prices at £10 and £5 for Ards v. The other Setanta Sports Cup semi-final tie, between Cork United and Shelbourne, will be played in Cork on Monday night and the final is scheduled for Saturday April 22, with Windsor Park the venue if Linfield reach the final. © The death of former Linfield manager Ewan Fenton in Limerick, aged 75, at the week-end saddened many supporters from the 1967-1970 period when Ewan was at Windsor Park. Ewan, a quiet unassuming man, guided Linfield to considerable success during his three years at ‘The Park’ and he enjoys an honourable place in the history of the Club. ° We extend a very warm welcome to Windsor Park today to the players, officials and supporters of Lisburn Distillery Football Club for the first time this season. The Whites have met the Blues twice before this season, with Linfield winning 5-0 ina Co. Antrim Shield semi-final tie at Seaview in November and 6-0 ina Carnegie Premier League game at Ballyskeagh in December. In the Premier League, Lisburn Distillery are in 10th position with 33 points from 25 games played. They are never a team to be under-rated and Linfield will need to play to top form to secure full points. * The attendance at Monday's Setanta Sports Cup tie between Linfield and Glentoran was 3,300, with the break-down on the Linfield side 2,850 and at the Glentoran end 450. Distillery Seconds v. Linfield Swifts Cae roe = Wee me a Sea ENC Naa roo} ta 03.06 umbro.com onelove=> hat an awesome performance our players put in against Glentoran to reach the semi-finals of the Setanta Sports Cup. It was an unbelievable scoreline which certainly did not flatter us and | know it provided supporters with a lot of enjoyment. Last year, we won the prized Setanta (all- Ireland) Sports Cup and the results this season have placed us in a very good position to retain the trophy, with the semi-final tie against Drogheda United at Windsor Park next Tuesday night and the final at the same venue, if we reach this stage. Nothing can be taken for granted, but we are in an incredible position - three trophies (including the Premier League Championship) on the sideboard and looking forward to a Nationwide trish Cup final and a Setanta Sports Cup semi-final decider. The remarkable achievements this season have exceeded all expectations, even by the highest Linfield standards, and in the coming five weeks we will be going all out to complete a highly memorable season — in style. Against Glentoran, we were missing top stalwarts Glenn Ferguson and Noel Bailie, but we ended up very convincing winner and recorded our biggest margin of victory against the Glens in more than 30 years. The margin of victory was one that even | did not expect, but we still have to face the Glens in two more games this season and | am sure they will regroup and come back with a more determined challenge. The forthcoming Setanta tie with Drogheda United will be eagerly awaited, but, first, we must take full points from Lisburn Distillery, always a team that can cause problems for us. We want to finish our domestic season unbeaten! This may be a tall order, but it is within the capabilities of the team and we will give it our best shot. With some quality signings made during the summer the Whites had entered the current season with hopes high of a decent campaign, but the League campaign started off badly with three successive defeats with saw the side pointless and bottom of the table. However fans of the club, which incidentally this year celebrates its 125th anniversary, needn't have worried as once again manager Paul Kirk gathered his troops and the road to recovery began. Indeed, after those three opening defeats the side then went unbeaten in six matches winning four and drawing two along the way. Given that they have also made the semi-final Stages of the CIS Cup along the way it had been a decent season thus far for the “Ballyskeagh Brazilians” as their supporters like to call them. From there however things went on the decline once again with a heavy defeat (6-0) by Linfield (not unexpected given the Blues fine form these days) being sandwiched in between two much less acceptable defeats by Ballymena and Larne. The side slipped down the table until they then found a return to form by crushing Institute 4-1 in the last game before Christmas. However, that turned out to be only a temporary improvement in that then they went on a six-game winless streak, a string of results that has left the wee whites perilously close to the drop. The pendulum then started to swing in the other direction with the team recording three straight wins which included a win at Shamrock Park and a 6-1 defeat of Armagh City. Sandwiched in between this the side had also managed to dispose of Ballymena in the Irish Cup and, all of a sudden, confidence was soaring at New Grosvenor. istillery hopin (Ae Ue th ena against First Division Bangor was awarded in the Irish Cup quarter-finals, surely a semi-final berth was there for the taking. But if the delight was positive what happened on ‘the day simply was not as the side produced one of the worst displays seen by a Distillery team in recent seasons and lost the game 1-0. In fact, Distillery were lucky on the day to get away with such a narrow defeat given the ineptitude of the performance. Morale dented again the side then slumped slightly back towards the relegation area, but, thankfully, winning their last two games. before today has now left them more or less safe in their quest for survival and indeed the club are still hopeful of a top half finish. It's hard to pinpoint what has been the problem this season, Paul Kirk's summer signings seemed to have being astute; Sean Armstrong joined from Coleraine, Andy Kilmartin and Damien McLaughlin came from Glentoran, whilst Ryan McCann joined from Linfield. Up front it has been the pacy John Martin who is leading the way with his eight goals to date seeing him lead the way on the goal- Scoring front where he is joined by the prolific Darren Armour and Francis Murphy. Martin, in particular, has really been catching the eye of late and his notable pace is as ever catching opponent's cold time after time. Not only that but his work rate this season has been first rate. Also now breaking into the first eleven is Northern Ireland under-19 International Ryan Catney, who signed for the club after being released by Championship side Reading. Catney, however, along with defender Stuart Thompson is suspended for today's game. k at Linfield Peer) AZ. >< boot loved by Michael Owen ae) Ss =! ley i} 9 9 3 VEE aU ee Supporters mourn passing of a popular manager gured inthe 1953 FA # " fon, the former Linfield 6 FP (manager who died last week-end Cup final for the Lancashire club in what after a short illness aged 75, was a highly was known as the Stanley Matthew final. popular personality at Windsor Park | He made 203 appearances for Blackpool. during his managerial term here. | He also played for a season for Wrexham Dundee-born, Ewan was team boss of | but moved to the Republic of Ireland in Linfield between June 1967 and June 1970. | 1960 as a player-manager with Limerick. Can you recall your first match? Yes, It was at Seaview midweek, we where nil each at half- time in one of the minor trophies. Wes Lamont went to the fans at half time telling us that we will get them in the second half. We lost 1-0. Who influenced you most? My Granda brought me to the matches and through him | became an ardent Blueman who follows Linfield everywhere and also Europe Did you idolise any particular player? | idolised two players, Tony Gorman and Soupy Campbell. | couldn't separate them Who is your current favourite player? Alan Mannus. This guy doesn't get the credit he deserves and is very consistent Who is your all time great? In my time, you couldn't go past Noel Ballie. “Mr Consistent” and a very nice guy. What other Irish League player from the past do you most admire? Glenn Dunlop, of Crusaders. He was tremendous and a massive part of the Crues during their good years in the mid-1990s. And the present? Davy O'Hare. A gentleman and one of the best keepers in the League why? Mourneview Park. The perfect model for an Irish League ground. Most memorable occasion following Linfield? Setanta all-Ireland final against Shelbourne. Like most Bluemen we where turning up hoping Linfield give the Shels a good game. To all our surprise we gave them more than a good game. Excellent day! If you had unlimited funds, who would you buy? (keep it realistic)? Portadown's Darren Kelly reckoned to be the best center half in the League. Stephen Carson, of Coleraine, would be my other pick. A great left winger. Do you support any other team in England or Scotland? | follow Manchester United. | lived close to Old Trafford and my Dad worked for SHARP and | got the odd complimentary. What was your best ever goal and by whom? Lee Feeney against Crusaders at Seaview before he went to Glasgow Rangers. An absolute peach! What would you like to change about Linfield for the good? The size and shape of the Stadium. A nice compact 12,000 seater stadium with the corners filled in with seats as well. Would create a good atmosphere even if there were only a couple of thousand in it. ‘What would you do to improve the Irish League? Decrease the amount of teams in the Premier League to make the Premier League more competitive. Any complaints re the management Committee or "Look at Linfield"? No complaints towards anyone in particular. My only complaint is the state of the seats in the Kop stand as they are very dirty and also the state of the front gates.
