PART 2 - READING
Read the following interview to a military man serving in Antarctica.

Captain Matías Alcorta Lucena is from Tucumán, Argentina. He is married and has
three daughters. He graduated from the Military Academy with a degree in Business
Administration in 2005. At the moment, he is stationed at Belgrano 2 base. The base
is located 77° 52’ 27” south and 34° 37’ 36” west, 1400 kilometres away from the
South Pole. This base is unique for scientific work because it is built on a nunatak, a
rock formation.

Q: How many people are there on the base?

A: There are twenty-one people on the base. There are 16 people from the Army, 2 from the Meteorology
Division of the Air Force and 3 from the National Antarctic Direction. We all have different jobs: mechanics,
meteorologists, electricians, plumbers, computer technicians, drivers, carpenters, cooks, scientists and
helpers.

Q: Are there any families or children?

A: No, there aren’t any families on the base. Families only live on Esperanza base. There, they have more
technological resources and there are also primary and secondary school teachers that help children with
their schooling. For teenagers there is a special space on the army remote teaching platform.

Q: What is your routine like? What time do you get up every day?

A: We have breakfast between 8 and 9 am. The people in charge of breakfast get up earlier than the rest
because they set the table and make water.

5
COLEGIO MILITAR DE LA NACIÓN
Ejercicios y textos originales© CÁTEDRA IDIOMAS

Q: Do you make water? Really?

A: Yes, we collect snow and ice, we put it on wooden sleighs and we take it to a pump. Then we use that
water for cooking and cleaning.

Q: How do you organize your everyday tasks?

A: While we are having breakfast, we distribute the tasks already planned for the week. We do maintenance
work at the car repair shop or fix the roofs. We take out the rubbish or do minor jobs in different areas of
the base. We also do mountain training and help the scientists working on the base. We have lunch at 1:00
pm and then we take a nap. We usually finish work at 6:00 pm but sometimes there is something important
to do and we go on working.

Q: What do you usually do in your spare time?

A: After work, I like doing gym. I follow an exercise programme called “insanity workout”. Then I have a
shower. After that, I play table tennis or pool. We have dinner at 8:00 and after dinner some people watch
films or series, some others play PlayStation games, and some others go online. But most of us try to relax
and prepare for the next day.

Q: What about weekends? What do you do then?

A: We work on Saturdays too, so the weekend starts on Saturday evening. We sometimes play table tennis,
pool, board games or PlayStation games, and we usually organize tournaments. We often read or do gym
too. The highlight of the week is Saturday night, when we have pizza and beer and we have a great time
together. On Sunday we are off duty.

A) Complete the chart with ten different activities mentioned in the interview. Are they
similar or different from your own routine?

SITUATION: A week ago, Private Johnson shared some photos of his new motorcycle in front of
his house on a social network. Two days later, he had a serious argument with Private Kosinsky
over some missing objects in the unit. The argument continued with heavy cyberbullying and
slander. A couple of days ago, the motorcycle was vandalized and the front of Johnson’s house
covered with graffiti. Everybody thinks Kosinsky is responsible for the attacks. Now the
atmosphere in the unit is tense because some people defend Kosinsky and others support
Johnson.

TASK: Your instructor has asked you to prepare a briefing for the whole of the academy on the
safe use of Internet and social networks. Work in pairs or groups. Draft a list of DO’s and
DONT’s and present it to the rest of the class. You can use audiovisual aids to complement

Transcript

a) I love living in San Diego. The weather here is perfect, sunny nearly every day, but
sometimes there is a cold wind that comes off the Pacific Ocean. There's also a famous
zoo here in San Diego and I like to go in the summer to see all the animals. My favorite
thing about San Diego is the many types of restaurant that are here. I love Chinese, Thai
and Indian food and in San Diego, I can eat them all. I go to college near the zoo. I am
studying to become a vet, so one day, I want to work inside the zoo. San Diego is not an
old city, but there are parts more than one hundred years old and there are interesting
museums here.
b) Chester is an old Roman city and I live near the centre. Chester is in the north of England
and the weather is sometimes terrible -- a lot of rain and wind, even in the summer. The
Romans were in Chester two thousand years ago and today, there are buildings and walls
from that period; it's incredible to think of something so old. I work for an advertising
agency and our office is near one of the Roman gates to the city. There are other big cities
near Chester, like Liverpool, Manchester and Birmingham, but I prefer to stay here. If I
want to go to London, it's only two or three hours on the train. Chester is not too big and
not too small. It's perfect for me!
c) I'm a student in Paris. The university I go to is very near the River Seine which passes
through Paris. I love my city. Millions of tourists come to Paris every year because it is
famous for being so beautiful -- there are buildings, bridges, art galleries and museums
here, and some are five hundred years old or more. French food is delicious and it's
famous all over the world: fresh croissants in the morning is the perfect breakfast and in
the evening, maybe you would like some snails! The weather in Paris is okay, the winter is
sometimes cold and wet, but the summers are always warm. Something I don't like about
Paris is the metro. It's very expensive and always too crowded.

PART 4 Gender issues in the Army

All Combat Roles Now Open to Women

Pre Reading: Read the title of the article and choose the right option

1. Only one combat role is open to women.

2. Women like combat.
3. Women can take combat roles if they want.
4. All Combat roles were not open to women before.
5. Women don`t like combat roles.

In a historic transformation of the American military, Defense Secretary Ashton B. Carter said
on Thursday that the Pentagon would open all combat jobs to women.

“There will be no exceptions,” Mr. Carter said at a news conference. He added, “They’ll be
allowed to drive tanks, fire mortars and lead infantry soldiers into combat. They’ll be able to
serve as Army Rangers and Green Berets, Navy SEALs, Marine Corps infantry, Air Force
parajumpers and everything else that was previously open only to men.”

20
COLEGIO MILITAR DE LA NACIÓN
Ejercicios y textos originales© CÁTEDRA IDIOMAS

The groundbreaking decision changes the rule that restricted women from combat roles in the
past, although women have often found themselves in combat in Iraq and Afghanistan over the
past 14 years. This decision will open about 220,000 military jobs to women.

This is the response to President Obama’s request three years ago to integrate women into all
combat jobs or ask for specific exemptions. The Navy and Air Force have already opened almost
all combat positions to women, and the Army has increasingly integrated its forces.

However, the announcement was a rebuke to the Marine Corps, which has a 93 percent male
force dominated by infantry and a culture that still segregates recruits by gender for basic
training. In September, the Marines requested an exemption for infantry and armor positions,
citing a yearlong study that showed integration could hurt its fighting ability.

Read the text and answer the questions

1. What can military women do now?

2. How many military jobs will be open to women?
3. Who requested to integrate women into combat jobs?
4. Which force segregates recruits by gender?

Dear Mr. Brown;

My name is Kenji Hakusan. I’m very happy to stay at your house for two weeks this summer.
Please let me introduce myself.

I’m eleven years old. I live in Tokyo with my family. My father works for a Japanese bank and
my mother teaches IKEBANA (Japanese style flower arrangement) at home. I have one sister
who is a high school student. I’m a member of the tennis club at my school. My favourite
subject is English, so I’m very glad to have a chance to go to America this summer.

I like to play games on the internet when I am free. I like reading books about Japanese history,
too. I can tell you about it if you like.

I’m sure to improve my English during my stay. I’m looking forward to seeing you soon.
Best regards,

Kenji

PART 2
T echnology on an Antarctic base

The role of technology on a military base makes life easier than it was in the past,
but there are some issues with it. The people on the base use the radio when they are
doing paperwork or they send reports because the radio has a broader Internet band.
They use Whatsapp for everyday things. Very often, videos and photos take very long to
download. Some people use Facebook, but only very early in the morning because there
is a lot of work to do. Also, working conditions are very hard, so many of the men leave
their cell phones in their rooms; if they are not careful, they may smash them while at
work. The base also has a toll-free number and they we use it to make and receive calls.
They don’t use video conferences with their families very much, only on special occasions
like birthdays, anniversaries or births. In their spare time they play Candy Crash, but they
try not to use these applications very much because they use up a lot of Internet and
slow it down.
Captain Alcorta Lucena is taking an online Master’s degree with a University on the
continent. During the day, the Internet signal is
very low but he does not have time to study then
because he is very busy at work. The signal gets
much better at night, so he usually studies after
dinner. He uses technology as an auxiliary tool; he
reads books online, does his assignments or takes
part in forums.
He uses technology very much, but he says
that it shouldn’t become an addiction. In January,
they were offline for a week and it was doomsday
for some people. They can’t count on Internet all
the time, but other technological devices, like
PlayStation consoles or personal computers, are of
great help.

Units 1 to 3 - Be

The verb be has the following forms:

I am We are
Present simple: Affirmative You are You are
He/She/It is They are
Am I? Are we?
Question form: Are you? Are you?
Is he/she it? Are they?

Negative: You are not/ aren’t You are not/aren’t
He/She/It is not/ isn’t They are not/aren't
I was We were
Past simple You were You were
He/She/It was They were

We use the verb to be:

1. with a noun: My mother is a teacher.

Bill Clinton was the president of the US.
2. with an adjective: This soup is delicious.
The children were good.
3. with the -ing form to make the We are walking down the street.
continuous aspect She is preparing lunch.

quantity and the age There are 30 cadets in this class but there
is only one teacher
5. with a prepositional phrase: John and his wife are from Manchester.
The flowers are on the table.

Unit 1 – Present Simple

The simple present tense in English is used to describe an action that is regular, true or normal.

We use the present tense:

1. For routines.

 I take the train to the office.

 The train to Berlin leaves every hour.
 John sleeps eight hours every night during the week.

37
COLEGIO MILITAR DE LA NACIÓN
Ejercicios y textos originales© CÁTEDRA IDIOMAS

2. For facts.

 The President of The USA lives in The White House.

 A dog has four legs.
 We come from Switzerland.

3. For habits.

 I get up early every day.

 Carol brushes her teeth twice a day.
 They travel to their country house every weekend.

4. For things that are always / generally true.

 It rains a lot in winter.

 The Queen of England lives in Buckingham Palace.
 They speak English at work.

We form the present tense using the base form of the infinitive (without the TO).

In general, in the third person we add 'S' in the third person.

Subject Verb The Rest of the sentence

I / you / we / they speak / learn English at home

he / she / it speaks / learns English at home

The spelling for the verb in the third person differs depending on the ending of that verb:

1. For verbs that end in -O, -CH, -SH, -SS, -X, or -Z we add -ES in the third person.

 go – goes
 catch – catches
 wash – washes
 kiss – kisses
 fix – fixes
 buzz – buzzes

2. For verbs that end in a consonant + Y, we remove the Y and add -IES.

 marry – marries
 study – studies
 carry – carries
 worry – worries

NOTE: For verbs that end in a vowel + Y, we just add -S.

 play – plays
 enjoy – enjoys
 say – says

38
COLEGIO MILITAR DE LA NACIÓN
Ejercicios y textos originales© CÁTEDRA IDIOMAS

To make a negative sentence in English we normally use don’t or doesn't with all verbs EXCEPT
To Be, Can, have got, among others.

 Affirmative: You speak French.

Negative: You don't speak French.

You will see that we add don't between the subject and the verb. We use Don't when the subject is
I, you, we or they.

 Affirmative: He speaks German.

Negative: He doesn't speak German.

When the subject is he, she or it, we add doesn't between the subject and the verb to make a
negative sentence. Notice that the letter S at the end of the verb in the affirmative sentence (because
it is in third person) disappears in the negative sentence. We will see the reason why below.

The following is the word order to construct a basic negative sentence in English in the Present
Tense using Don't or Doesn't.

Subject don't/doesn't Verb* The Rest of the sentence

I / you / we / they don't

have / buy
cereal for breakfast
eat / like etc.
he / she / it doesn't

* Verb: The verb that goes here is the base form of the infinitive = The infinitive without TO
before the verb. Instead of the infinitive To have it is just the have part.

Remember that the infinitive is the verb before it is conjugated (changed) and it begins with TO.
For example: to have, to eat, to go, to live, to speak etc.

Examples of Negative Sentences with Don't and Doesn't:

 You don't speak Arabic.

 John doesn't speak Italian.
 We don't have time for a rest.
 It doesn't move.
 They don't want to go to the party.
 She doesn't like fish.

To make a question in English we normally use do or does. It has no translation in Spanish though
it is essential to show we are making a question. It is normally put at the beginning of the question.

 Affirmative: You speak English.

Question: Do you speak English?

You will see that we add DO at the beginning of the affirmative sentence to make it a question. We
use Do when the subject is I, you, we or they.

 Affirmative: He speaks French.

Question: Does he speak French?

39
COLEGIO MILITAR DE LA NACIÓN
Ejercicios y textos originales© CÁTEDRA IDIOMAS

When the subject is he, she or it, we add DOES at the beginning to make the affirmative sentence
a question. Notice that the letter S at the end of the verb in the affirmative sentence (because it is in
third person) disappears in the question. We will see the reason why below.

We DON'T use Do or Does in questions that have the verb To Be or Modal Verbs (can, must,
might, should etc.)

Word Order of Questions with Do and Does

The following is the word order to construct a basic question in English using Do or Does.

Do/Does Subject Verb The Rest of the sentence

Do I / you / we / they
have / need
a new bike?
want etc.
Does he / she / it

Examples of Questions with Do and Does:

 Do you need a dictionary?

 Does Mary need a dictionary?
 Do we have a meeting now?
 Does it rain a lot in winter?
 Do they want to go to the party?
 Does he like pizza?

Unit 2 - Prepositions of place

We use prepositions of place to talk about location.

AT The secretary is sitting at her desk.

The man was at the cinema

BEHIND The car park is behind the building.

BETWEEN The prisoner is sitting between the two policemen.

IN The pen was in the box.

He lives in South Africa.

IN FRONT OF The teacher is standing in front of the class.

The car was parked in front of the garage.

NEXT TO / BESIDE / BY In my English lesson I always sit next to / beside / by my friend.

The bank is next to / beside/ by the hotel.

40

ON The painting was on the wall.

The boy is sitting on the chair.

OVER/ABOVE The sign is above the door. It read 'No smoking'.

I put the tablecoth over the table.

UNDER / BELOW The temperature outside was below 0°.

The soldier was under the bridge.

Unit 3 - Present Continuous

We use the present continuous tense:

1. When somebody is doing something at this moment.

 Sarah is changing her clothes right now.

 Her boyfriend is waiting for her.
 We are learning the progressive tense in English.

2. When something is happening at this moment. When the action has started but hasn't
finished.

 It is snowing at the moment.

 The economy is growing at an exponential rate.
 The children are sleeping, so please be quiet.

3. To talk about something that is happening around the time of speaking but not
necessarily at that exact moment.

 Alfredo is studying a lot for his exam.

 I'm reading a great book. (not necessary right at this moment)
 We are planning a trip to Jamaica.

Present Simple vs. Present Continuous

A significant difference between these two tenses is we use the simple present tense for
things that are permanent or are in general and the present progressive tense for things
that may change or are temporary.

Compare:

Permanent Temporary

Simon lives in Birmingham. Simon is living with his friends for now.

James smokes. James is smoking in the kitchen.

We walk to work. We're walking in the park.

Verbs that we don't use in the Present Continuous Tense

Another difference is that there are some verbs in English that we don't use in the present
continuous. These include:

Belong - Cost - Hate - Have (possession) - Hear - Know - Like - Love - Need - Own -
Remember - Seem - Smell - Understand - Want
