EXERCISE 1

1. Thevenin Theorem and Maximum Power Transfer

We are to determine the Thevenin voltage between terminals A and B o Fig 1. The first step is to open
the circuit between terminals A and B as shown in Fig 2 below.

fig 2

No current is passing to 𝑅𝐿 .
10∗10
R= =5KΩ
10+10
The equivalent circuit is then the one shown in fig3 below

fig 3

We then find the equivalent resistance of the circuit

9.7 ∗ 4.7
𝑅𝑒𝑞 = 5 + = 3.17𝑘
9.7 + 4.7
𝑉 10𝑉
The source current is then 𝐼 = 𝑅
= 3.17𝐾 = 0.003154574𝐴 .The current through the 10k (R3) resistor is
thus.
4.7𝑘
𝐼 = 0.003154574 × = 0.000336𝐴
4.7𝑘 + 10𝑘
R3 and 𝑉𝑇ℎ are in parallel hence 𝑉𝑇ℎ = 𝑉𝑅3 = 0.000163𝐴 × 10 000 = 1.63𝑉

(ii)Determining the Thevenin resistance

We start first by short circuiting the 10V voltage source. Thus editing fig 3 to look like fig 4 below

fig4

Fig 4 is very similar to fig3. Hence the procedure of finding 𝑅𝑇ℎ is the same as that of finding 𝑅𝑒 in the
latter discussion.

Hence 𝑅𝑇ℎ = 3.17𝑘Ω

(iii)Maximum Power
First the power absorbed by the resistor is to be found. It’s also best to draw the equivalent circuit (fig 5)
using the parameters found in the latter discussion

𝑉𝑇ℎ
The power absorbed by 𝑅𝐿 = 𝑖 2 𝑅𝑙 = (𝑅 )
𝑇ℎ +𝑅𝐿

By differentiating the equation above it can be proved that the maximum power transfer occurs when
𝑅𝐿 = 𝑅𝑇ℎ
THEN:

P=I2RTH
P= (1.63)2(3170Ω)
P=8422.373W

iv) EXPERIEMENTAL

2. The measured value of RTH=3.17250kΩ

3. Comparing the theoretical values with the experimental values.
The value of VTH are equal, theoretical is 1.63V while experimentally is
1.620983V and for the value of RTH, the theoretical value is 3170Ω while the
experimental value is 3.17250Ω.
