Rate with Fractions



Notes
To find the unit rate:
1.  Determine what is the first quantity (numerator) and
what is the second quantity (denominator)
*look for clues like “how many miles per hour”*
2. Divide the first amount by the second amount
3. Write the unit rate as # (first unit) per (second unit)

Example: If Mr. Rojas sends 34 text messages in 4 hours,


how many messages does he send per hour?
34 messages
à 34 ÷ 4 = 8.5
4 hours
He sends 8.5 messages per hour
Jose can deliver 34 packages in 2 hours. What is his
rate, in packages per minute?

34 packages ÷ 2 = 17 packages per hour

17 packages ÷ 60 minutes = 0.2833333…


0.2833333… = 0.28
Jose can deliver 0.28 packages per minute
Unit Rates with Fractions

If you are dividing two fraction unit rates (with a complex


fraction) remember to KCF

Practice: Manny uses ⅔ cup of water every ¼ batch of


brownies. How many cups does Manny use per batch?

⅔ cup
⅔ ÷ ¼ ⅔ Ÿ 4/1 = 8/3 = 2 ⅔

Manny uses 2 ⅔ cups of water per batch of brownies


If ⅓ of a gallon of paint covers ⅕ of a gate, then
how many gallons of paint are needed to cover
the entire gate?

⅓÷ ⅕ =

⅓ Ÿ 5/1 =

1 ⅔ gallons of paint are needed to cover the entire
fence.
Emeril can grill 6/7 of a steak in 3/14 of an hour. How
many steaks can he grill in a full hour?

He can grill 4 steaks per hour
