Pop Stars WORKSHEET 2

Read about Britney and Christina. Check your answers to the quiz on Worksheet 1.

Britney Spears was born on December 2nd, 1981 in Kentwood, Louisiana. When
she was eight she auditioned for a part on The New Mickey Mouse Club in
Florida. She was refused because she was too young. When she returned three
years later, after spending that time studying at the Professional Performing Arts
School in New York, she got the part. The show was cancelled two years later
and Britney went home. However, she was soon back as a solo pop artist and her
first album Baby, One More Time, released in 1998, hit the top of the charts, as
did the single of the same name. Success meant that in 1999 she became one of
the top ten youngest female artists of all time to reach No. 1 in the pop charts.
In 2000 she signed a deal with Pepsi to promote their drink (even though it’s
rumoured she prefers Coca-Cola), and then she had a relationship with Justin
Timberlake. Unfortunately, they split up very publicly last year.
Madonna features in Britney’s latest song and video, Me Against The Music.
Recently on a trip to London (where Madonna now spends much of her time),
Britney said she likes the place so much that she may soon buy a house
there herself.

Christina Aguilera was born on December 18th, 1980. At the age of 12, she secured
a role on the TV show The New Mickey Mouse Club. Her co-stars on the show were
Justin and JC (who later became two of the five members of ‘N Sync), Keri Russell,
Ryan Gosling (who later starred in Young Hercules) and Britney Spears (who later
became her greatest rival). After the show was cancelled in 1994, she went to Japan,
at the age of 14, where she recorded a hit with Japanese pop star Keizo Nakanishi.
Her first break at home came when she was asked to sing Reflection for the Disney
film Mulan in 1998. A year later, she released her first single, Genie in a Bottle,
which went to No. 1, making her one of the top ten youngest female artists of all time
to have had a No. 1 single. She released her first album, Christina Aguilera, in the
same year. More hits followed; What A Girl Wants, I Turn To You, Come On Over
Baby and Lady Marmalade (for the hit film Moulin Rouge). She was even asked by
President Clinton to sing the first song on his Millennium Special, but she was
unable to. In 2000, she won the Grammy for Best New Artist, which came as a great
surprise to her. She has achieved great popularity in Latin and South America
her songs in Spanish (her father’s family is from Ecuador). She was also chosen to be
Coca Cola’s spokesperson for both North and South America.
