Nervous system

By Teresa
Vocabulary..
CNS:Brain and spinal cord

PNS: nervous system outside brain and spinal cord

ANS: nervous system responsible for control of the bodily functions not consciously directed

Neurons: a specialized cell transmitting nerve impulses; a nerve cell.

Axon: elongated projection that conducts impulses away from cell body of neuron

Dermatome: skin surface area supplied by a single cranial or spinal nerve

Neuritis: general term referring to nerve inflammation

Adrenergic fibers: axons of sympathetic postganglionic neurons release norepinephrine (noradrenaline

Cholinergic fibers: preganglionic axons of parasympathetic and sympathetic systems and parasympathetic postganglionic axons release
acetylcholine)

Spinal tap: is the withdrawal of some CSF from the subarachnoid space in the lumbar region of the spinal cord
Function

The nervous system consists of the brain, spinal cord, sensory organs, and all of the
nerves that connect these organs with the rest of the body. Together, these organs
are responsible for the control of the body and communication among its parts.

It provides signals to other cells and creates movement in the body

structures

The nervous system is divided into two parts: the central nervous system consisting
of the brain and spinal cord. These structures are protected by bone and cushioned
from injury by the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) the peripheral system which connects
the central nervous system to the rest of the body.
disorders
Seizure: sudden burst of abdominal neuron activity that results in temporary
changes in brain function

Paralysis: loss of ability to make voluntary movements

Shingles: viral infection caused by chickenpox virus that has invaded the dorsal root
ganglion and remained dormant

Neuroblastoma: highly malignant tumor of the sympathetic nervous system,

primarily affecting young children

Endoneurium:surrounds individual fibers within a nerve
