WHER.EAS it is expedient fuflher to amend the Women in Distress and kention Fund Act,
I 996 (XV of I 9%) for the purposes hereinaffer appeaing;

It is hereby enacted as follows:-

L Short tide atrd corE[retrccmcot,- ( I ) This Act shall be called the Womcn in Distsess
and kention Fund (Amerdment) Act, 2017,-
(2) It shall come into force at once.
2- AEerdhent of section 6, Act XV of 1996.- In the Women in Distress and Detention
fund Act 1996 (XV of 1996), in scction 6, in sutlseclion (t), for clauses (i) to (viii), the
following shall be substituted, namelyi

(i) Minister-in-charge ofthe administ ati!'e Division; Chairperson

(ii) One rvoman nember each ofthe National Merfibers

Assembly ard the Scnate to be nominated by
the Speaker and the Chairman respectively;

(iiD Secretary of the administrative Division;

(i") One uoman prominent social worker from each

province to b€ oominated by the Provincial
Govemments: ald

(y) An officer in BS-20 or above ofthe administrative

STATEMENT OF OB'ECTS AI\D REASONS

Women in Disfess and Detention Fund was established under the women in Disress and
Detention Fund Ac! I 996 (X!- of I 996). The objects of this Fund are to provide financial and
legal assistance to the women languishing in jails on accou of dilTerent allegations and those
who face extreme hardships.

2. In view of the Constitulion (Eighteeflth Amendment) Act, 2010 (X of 2010) and

consequontly reallocation of business of various Minishies and Divisions, it is expedient to
amend the said Act for appropiate operation of the Fund, which is beneficial for all classes of
women thmughout the country.

3. The Bill seeks to achieve the aforesaid objective.
