Main Idea:​ ​Describe the relationship between the moral and political ideas of the
Great Awakening and the development of revolutionary fervor.

● Shift of ideas between collectiveness to individualism

● Guys like Jonathan Edward and George Whitefield wanted
to inspire people to go to church again
● Talked about God seeing everyone as equal - started to
influence politics
● King and Peasant on the same level.

● Started among Presbyterians in New England


● It was a reaction against the formality of the established
congregational churches
The Great  ● That led to thriving colleges
Awakening -   ● First common experience shared by large numbers of

identity.
● This movement led to a fissure with people who wanted

● People started reading the bible at home instead of listening


to a priest in a church.
● There was individualism in religion - instead of going to
Revolutionary  church as a specific time it more like “what time works for

● There was an idea that people could be saved if they have a
personal connection with God. The value of a person was
not by their blood (not about their social hierarchy) it more

● The enlightenment was an idea that anybody could be who


they wanted to be.
● The main idea was that two social and political movements
led to people wanting independence.
“New World”  ● It matters now because these political and social movements

● It didn’t matter if you were a king or a peasant they were
still equal. Now the peasant could become president.
● ​The great awakening that was about religion led to the
enlightenment which was about science and politics.
