Control of vibration in civil structures

Abstract: This paper reports recent trends in active vibration control mainly as developed in Japan
for civil structures. Firstly, it classifies vibration control methods and controllers, especially active
dynamic absorbers that are widely used in mechanical and civil engineering. Secondly, it addresses
basic problems in the control of vibration of flexible structures such as formulating the reduced-
order model required for designing vibration controllers, the correct arranging of sensors and
actuators, and how to prevent spillover instability. Finally, the practical use of control theories such
as linear–quadratic control theory, H control theory, neural network theory and other topics are

discussed.

4 DESIGN OF CONTROL SYSTEM

4.1 Theory for active vibration control


There are several control theories which need mention-
ing: classical control theory was initiated in the 1950s;
modem control theory came about early in the 1960s

modes, including bending and twisting modes, are those


needing attention. By choosing five modelling points on
the structure, and assuming appropriate lumped masses
and stiffnesses at and between these points, a discrete
model can be created. Evidently, the modelling points
should be able to reflect the motion of these five modes
as well as possible. In this case, the five modelling points
are chosen to be located at the nodes of the sixth mode,
as shown in Fig. 17, with a plus that the sixth mode will
exert no influence on the model [7]. It should be noted
that choosing the modelling points is not based on the
continuous structure coordinate, but on the FEM model
of the structure; i.e. only the nodes of the FEM model
