Education and Project Officer / Communications Manager

The Steelworkers Humanity Fund (SHF) is a registered Canadian charity working in international
development, sponsored by the United Steelworkers (USW). The SHF works to build the capacity of
civil society partners to uphold human rights and labour rights, and address the underlying causes of
global poverty. The SHF’s education program is focused on the membership of the USW, and strives to
make connections between global struggles and struggles of workers in Canada.

The SHF is seeking a dynamic individual to join our small staff team, reporting to the executive director
of the SHF.

Primary Responsibilities:
1. Communications and Outreach
- Design and implement communications strategy focusing on increasing the profile of the SHF
among the donor base of SHF (ie. USW members), specifically to develop and maintain a
social media strategy and presence for the SHF, but also to continue print based
communications
- Manage a SHF strategy promoting participation in SHF among USW activists and staff
- Support SHF public policy or corporate campaigns
2. Education
- Facilitate educational courses and seminars on issues related to globalization, development,
and international solidarity
- On-going design of educational material to keep them up to date
- Coordinate and lead learning exchanges with SHF partners
3. Project Management of International and Canadian Development Projects
- Manage a set of the SHF’s international or Canadian development projects, which includes:
o Assisting project partners design and implement projects
o Monitor project reporting
o Evaluate project results
o Identify and apply for external funding opportunities
4. Strategic Projects / Innovative Programming
- Identify and develop opportunities for new strategic initiatives
- , educational activities with USW members, or innovative programming which will promote
labour and human rights and strengthen the SHF and its global partners

Qualifications
• At least 5 years of relevant work experience in the area of global justice and solidarity, including
substantial experience with social media, adult education, and international development.
• Commitment to human rights, social justice and improving the lives of working people.
• Understanding of role and functioning of trade unions
• Demonstrated understanding of how civil society can effect social transformation
• Capacity to work with people from different cultures
• Excellent communication skills, including ability to convey complex ideas in plain language
• Demonstrated ability to drive communications and outreach strategies using traditional, web-
based and social media channels in a progressive political context
• Expert knowledge and proficiency with traditional and social media tools and ability to use
analytics to develop a communications/outreach strategy
• Excellent education facilitator skills, and experience in curriculum design
• Excellent problem solving skills
• Fluent in Spanish or Portuguese
• Experience working in a team in a fluid, fast-paced environment, with minimal supervision
• Expertise on challenges and opportunities in international development, globalization, and
international solidarity, especially as they relate to gender, class and intersectionality
• Experience managing international development projects
• Experience working in coalitions and alliances
• Able to travel extensively in Canada and internationally, and work outside of normal office hours
• Fund raising experience an asset
• Able to work in both official languages
Starting date: July 1, 2018 (flexible)

The position is based in Toronto.

Compensation starting at $78,000, with annual stepped increases over 4 years to $98,473. Attractive
benefit plan, including pension contribution.

Must be eligible to work in Canada.
