Choosing the Right
Certification Program
SSPC Protective Coatings Inspector
Program - Frequently Asked Questions
“PCI...Everything you need, nothing you don’t.”

Choosing a Protective Coatings Inspector Certification Program

In 2007, based on the strength of over 15 years of training coatings professionals, SSPC launched the new Protective Coatings Inspector
certification program. Called PCI, the program was created to fulfill a need identified by SSPC members for a program that provides ef-
fective and quality instruction while minimizing job interruptions. They also wanted a cost-effective certification alternative that would
take into account previous training and experience.
How does the SSPC PCI program compare to the NACE CIP program?
The SSPC PCI program was designed in accordance with ASTM D 3276, the standard written by ASTM International regarding the
certification of coatings inspectors. Like the NACE program, the SSPC program meets this standard.

What are the major differences between the SSPC PCI program and the NACE CIP program?
There are a few significant differences between the SSPC and NACE programs, primarily in the areas of Time, Flexibility, Cost, Program
Oversight and Recertification. These differences are outlined below. (Note: “Cost” section reflects member rates.)
TIME FLEXIBILITY COST
SSPC PCI :: SSPC PCI :: SSPC PCI :: NACE CIP ::
6 days = 5 days training + 1 day exam - Accounts for other formal training $1,395 course fee $1,685 course fee (L1)
- Allows for OJT and Field Experience $1,395 TOTAL $1,685 course fee (L2)
NACE CIP :: $875 exam fee (Peer)
- Test out of course by passing exam
6 days = 5 days training + 1 day exam (Level 1)
$4,245 TOTAL
6 days = 5 days training + 1 day exam (Level 2) NACE CIP ::
1 day = Peer Review - Must take NACE training for certification * All fees include member and advance
13 days TOTAL registration discounts.

OVERSIGHT RECERTIFICATION
SSPC PCI :: Disciplinary Action Criteria (DAC) used to ensure ethical SSPC PCI :: Done every 4 years. Take the PCI refresher; Document
practices. Certification can be suspended or revoked due to violations. minimum 2000 hours coatings inspection experience; Have no
detrimental disciplinary actions.
More Information
Has the PCI Program been accepted by the international coatings community?
Yes. Enthusiastically! To date, courses have been held and are scheduled for the following
countries: Japan, Indonesia, Singapore, China, Saudi Arabia, USA, Canada. Vietnam, Trinidad
and more.

Does the Program have official recognition from an international agency?

Other than meeting the ASTM International
standard (D 3276 “Standard Guide for Painting
Inspectors “), the PCI Program has been
approved by the American Bureau of Shipping
(ABS), one of the world’s largest commercial
shipping classification societies, as equivalent
to NACE Coating Inspector Level 2 and FROSIO
Inspector Level III in accordance with the IMO
Performance Standard for Protective Coatings
and IACS CSR. We are also working with other agencies on approval of the program.

How many PCI-certified Inspectors are there?

Since the launch of the program in late 2007, more than 200 inspectors have been trained
via PCI, with more than 112 of them achieving certification and 87 achieving basic inspector
recognition. In 2009, SSPC expects to more than double the numbers of both the basic and
certified levels.
