7.1 Trigonometric ratios
The trigonometric ratios
• If we fix an acute angle,𝜃 then all right-angled triangles that have 𝜃 as one of their
angles are similar. So, in all such triangles, corresponding pairs of sides are in the
same ratio.
• The side opposite the right angle is called the hypotenuse. We label the side
opposite 𝜃 as the opposite and the remaining side as the adjacent. Using these
names we can list the following standard ratios:

• The trigonometric ratios can be used to find lengths and angles in right-angled
triangles.
We know that a triangle can be completely determined if we are given two sides
and the included angle.
However, if we know two sides and the included angle in a triangle, the sine rule
does not help us determine the remaining side or the remaining angles.
• If we take any triangle with two given sides a and b about a given (acute) angle,
𝜃 then the area of the triangle is depending on which sides and angles we know,
the formula can be written in three ways:
