CHAPTER 7
 Resolution Triangle
7.1 Trigonometric ratios
 The trigonometric ratios

• If we fix an acute angle,𝜃 then all right-angled triangles that have 𝜃 as one of their
angles are similar. So, in all such triangles, corresponding pairs of sides are in the
same ratio.

• The side opposite the right angle is called the hypotenuse. We label the side
opposite 𝜃 as the opposite and the remaining side as the adjacent. Using these
names we can list the following standard ratios:
Example 1
• The trigonometric ratios can be used to find lengths and angles in right-angled
triangles.

Find the value of x in the following triangle.

7.2 Sine rule

 The Sine rule

• In the triangle ABC, labelled as shown, we have

• It can also be written as

Example 2
7.3 Cosine rule

 The Cosine rule

 We know that a triangle can be completely determined if we are given two sides
and the included angle.

 However, if we know two sides and the included angle in a triangle, the sine rule
does not help us determine the remaining side or the remaining angles.

 Alternatively, the formula can be rearranged to obtain the angle

7.4 The area of triangle

 The area of triangle

• If we take any triangle with two given sides a and b about a given (acute) angle,
𝜃 then the area of the triangle is depending on which sides and angles we know,
the formula can be written in three ways:
