Table1: Showing Calculated Strain values corresponding to loads applied.

Sample Calculation for 10 kN load applied

For Plane 1_3

Lengths recorded

1_2 = 2.788mm

2_3 = 2.786 mm

2.788+ 2.786
∴ Average = =2.787 mm
2

Initial length recorded at zero load applied was 2.796 mm (average for 1_3 at 0 load)

(2.787−2.796 )
∴ Strain (ϵ ) at 1_3 section = =−0.003
2.796

NB: negative means it actually was in compression for the 10 kN load.

This Calculation was repeated for sections 4_6 and 7_9 for each load applied.

The values obtained were recorded in Table 1.

Calculating Ultimate Moment of Resistance, Mu

Pu = 1.2 PD + 1.6 PL

wD = Self weight of beam

100 ×200
wD= ×23.71=0.474 kN / m
1000000

∴ P D =0.474 ×1.4=0.664 kN

Max failure load for beam = 65 kN (PL)

∴ Pu = 1.2(0.664) + 1.6(65) = 104.8 kN

For Simply supported beams:

Pu L 104.8 ×1.40
Ultimate moment of resistance M u= = =18.34 kNm
