Creating a flyer
Instructional Goal
- Using Microsoft Word to create a promotional flyer.

Needs Assessment
- A major requirement for students to be considered College and Career ready is to show
competency in Microsoft Office skills. Being able to use Microsoft Office programs to
efficiently create and use business documents is highly pursued by employers in the workplace.
This unit will acquaint students with the home tab ribbon and the functions within to create an
advertisement for a business promotion

Learner Analysis
- The target students for this unit will be 9th and 10th grade students who have elected to take
Information Technology Applications as an elective course.

- Academic abilities will vary widely from student to student

Prerequisite Skills
- Students have a good understanding of the use of computers and technology.

- Students have little to no knowledge of the interface of Microsoft Word.

- Students have little to no knowledge of the appropriate format and digital design of a
business flyer.

Mode of Instruction
- The classroom teacher will teach this unit using both direct and independent instruction.
Direct instruction will involve the teacher using classroom discussion to introduce the
Microsoft Word interface and Ribbon groups using a projector. Students will also use
online games to help check for understanding. Independent instruction will require
students to use a classroom textbook to complete a chapter project that introduces them to
concepts they will use in their mastery assignment. Students will show mastery by
creating a flyer from scratch that promotes a business of their choice.

Daily Activities
The following schedule is designed for a 50-minute bell schedule. Please adjust
days and activities to work with your class bell schedule.

Day 1:
- Instructor will give students the following handouts:
- Interface Parts
- Instructor will introduce the interface parts and the functions of each while
students use the Interface Parts handout to take notes.
- Students will participate in a Quizalize online review to demonstrate
knowledge of Microsoft Word interface parts.

Day 2:

- Instructor will hand out the following documents:


- Font Group Quick Reference
- Paragraph Group Quick Reference
- Instructor will discuss the font group and paragraph groups while
demonstrating each commands purpose while using a projector.
- Students will use the documents listed above to take notes during discussion.
- Following discussion, the instructor will direct students to pair up with a
partner. Instructor will give each group a blank copy of both quick reference
document above and the pair’s will work together to fill out the documents.
Instructor will roam the room to help students who are struggling to work
through the document.
- Quizizz Closure – Students will participate in a Quizizz online review to
check for understanding of font and paragraph groups.

Day 3 - 5: Students will use the next three days to work through the Word Chapter
1 Textbook project in the Shelly Cashman: Microsoft Office 2013 Introductory
Series textbook.

- Students will practice skills learned in day one and two while working
through the textbook project. During the next three days, students will also

be introduced to the Insert and Design tab of Microsoft Word as well as the
format of a flyer.
- At the end of day 5, the instructor will provide students with the Flyer
Format Exit Ticket to check for student understanding of a flyer’s format.

Day 6: Students will spend day 6 working through the Key Pieces handout to
identify all of the information needed for their flyer.

- Instructor will observe student work prior to leaving the classroom.

Day 7-8: Students will create flyer with the information they gathered using
Microsoft Word.

- Instructor will hand out the Flyer Rubric for students to make sure all
components are included in their flyer.

All resources used within this unit will only be used for educational purposes and in line
with all copyright laws.
