Concept Statement

When going to the fitness center, there is an expectation to feel

energized, whether it be for an early morning workout, or after a
long day at work. Using bright greens, blues, and oranges will be
perfect to liven up the space. Since there is also a sense of
community and interaction involved at the fitness, incorporating
some gray and black into the designs will help keep things grounded
and comfortable. As it is important to take care of our bodies, being
conscious of taking care of our environment is also important.
Selecting sustainable materials will be a top priority.

Justification

• The goal was to create a place that was lively, and also
professional. I selected colors that would reflect those aspects, as
well as materials that are sustainable. The paint from Benjamin
Moore is part of the Natura Interior Paints, which states to be
asthma and allergy friendly, as well as VOC and emissions free.
The paint is durable for a high traffic levels. The vinyl from Versa
has many environmental and health considerations, and also has
USGBC LEED support.
Cleaning & Maintenance

• Both the paint and the vinyl are easy to maintain, as well as
clean. Simple water and soap will keep both materials clean. If
damage occurs to the paint, touching up with the paint will repair.
If damage occurs to the vinyl, an entire strip will need to be
replaced.

Sunlight Fluorescent LED

The color under sunlight seems to be the darkest/richest of the three. Under the
fluorescent lights, the color is lightened to almost a yellow instead of the orange
it’s supposed to be. The color under the LED lighting looks almost the same as the
color under sunlight, just not as rich.

Justification

• The colors in flooring chosen stay congruent with the concept

statement of bright colors with an achromatic color scheme. The
carpet tile and broadloom, wood tile, and rubber flooring are both
commercial grade and eco friendly.
Cleaning & Maintenance

• The carpet in the entry way/reception area should be vacuumed

daily, as they would have heavy traffic.
• The carpet in the conference room would have medium traffic,
and so should be vacuumed 3 times a week.
• For spills on carpet: blot or scrape, never scrub, and use general
purpose spotter products.
• For the enhanced resilient tile: sweep daily, and if needed only
use neutral pH cleaning products for mopping.
• For the rubber flooring: sweep or vacuum daily, if needed use low
foam neutral cleaning products for scrubbing or mopping.

Sunlight Fluorescent LED

The carpet is the sharpest under the sunlight, though that could very well be just how the
camera captured it. The color under the fluorescent is a light grey than the other two photos,
and not as sharp. The color under the LED is the darkest grey of the three photos.

Justifications

The red brick will add to the warmth of the bright color scheme in
the Juice Bar. The white-grey stone goes well with the
sophistication of the achromic color scheme, with the bright blue
paint showing behind it. Adding mirrors will not only make the room
feel bigger, but will allow members to watch for good form. The
Acoustic vertical panels will add into the playful, bright color
scheme, as well as help keep the noise level to go beyond the
exercise room.
Cost Estimations: Mirrored Glass

• Exercise Room – North Wall = 45’

• Dimensions of Mirrored Glass = 6’ tall x 8’ long
• 45/8= 5.625 = 5 5/8
• Mirrors needed = 5
• Price (includes mirrors, delivery, and installation) = $1,995

Maintenance

• The brick and stone wall panels can be washed with a

sponge/cloth.
• The Acoustic Vertical panels has a wash resistance that will allow
for dusting without fear a damaging the product.
• The mirrored glass can easily be cleaned with a general glass
cleaner.
Light Study

Sunlight Fluorescent Light LED Light

The stone under sunlight has a soft glow effect, and the colors are somewhat muted. However
the sunlight does bring out every line and crevice. The fluorescent light brightens the colors and
heightens the blue tones, but doesn’t allow for the lines to stand out. The LED light brought out
the yellow tones, and allow more of the contrast show, versus the stone under the fluorescent
lighting.

Justification

The countertop chosen for the Juice bar brings in the achromic
color scheme, and is very durable for high traffic. The laminate for
the cabinetry in the juice bar matches the wood flooring.
The countertop chosen for the reception desk matches the color
scheme and is also very durable for high traffic. The laminate for
the cabinetry will also go along with the color scheme.
Light Study

Sunlight Fluorescent LED

The sunlight could pick up many of the colors that are in the laminate tile. Under the
fluorescent light, much of the blue is picked up, but the yellow was not. The LED lighting
picked up much of the yellow tones, but not the blue.

Reflection

Choosing materials is a main component for an interior designer, and knowing

what to choose is a critical skill set. The specification sheets was a great tool to
learn, as it has helped me search for the information I needed on the materials. I
also learned that websites can only get you so far, and contacting the company is
the best route to go through for specific information.
Putting a concept statement together first can make a large project like this
possible. Although I had an idea of color schemes, the concept statement helped
me hone into more of the feel and atmosphere of the project, as well as the basic
needs the client may expect to have.
Lastly, this class gave me an opportunity to try out different ways to present the
project. It was certainly a game to find the right balance that allowed for the
client/peers/instructor to correctly interpret the meaning of my designs.
Because, no matter how great a selection of materials might be, if the client
cannot piece together the designer’s vision, then the project cannot come to life.
