I. OBJECTIVES:
At the end of the discussion, the students are expected to:
1. Define persuasive and argumentative writing.
2. Distinguish persuasive from argumentative writing.
3. Identify the reasons, words and images used which contribute to the persuasive power of
commercials or texts.
4. Compare the text found in a persuasive article from that of an argumentative one.
5. Create a persuasive and an argumentative topic.

II. SUBJECT MATTER

Topic: Persuasive and Argumentative Writing

III. PROCEDURE
1. Brief recall of the previous session.
2. Introduction of the new topic by setting expectations of the students.

Motivation
3. Play for the students a persuasive commercial. Then, discuss the following:
- What is the purpose of the commercial? (to persuade the audience)
- What reasons are given for the consumer to buy the item?
- What words, phrases, or images make the purchase seem absolutely necessary?
- What is the other side of the argument for not buying the product? (watching too much TV can lead to
an unhealthy lifestyle, etc.)
4. The teacher will explain that presenting just one side of an argument, like the commercial, is similar to
persuasive writing, while in argumentative writing both sides of an issue are addressed. Then, divide the
class into groups (already organized) and give each group copies of the two printed webpages discussing
solar power. Ask them to read the two articles together and then ask them to jot down how the two
articles differ.
5. When all groups have completed the task, the teacher will ask each group to discuss their answers.

Discussion
6. Give a copy of the handout “What Is the Difference Between Persuasive and Argumentative Writing?”
and discuss the two styles of writing. Ask students to find specific examples of the given characteristics
in the two samples given in the prior activity.
7. The teacher will also discuss the different appeals/techniques employed in persuasive writing.

Activity
7. Explain to the students that they will be writing an persuasive essay which will require them to
brainstorm on an issue. Furthermore, stress that students will commit to one side of the issue. They may
use other reference materials at their disposal such as books and magazines to strengthen their points.
A handout will be given to each group to guide them in the course of their work.

IV. EVALUATION
The outputs of the students will be the basis for evaluation. The rubrics is readily available .

V. ASSIGNMENT
1. Using one of the topics you chose earlier, create an argumentative essay discussing your
selected topic.
