Assignment – I: Group Assignment

INSTRUCTIONS:
i. The assignment is to be completed as a group task comprising of three group members.
ii. The assignment task is to be accomplished as suggested and discussed in the class.
iii. It carries 30% marks of the total course work, 20% for Report and 10% for Presentation.
iv. Submission:
1. The assignment is to be completed and submitted in the prescribed format
i. Use Times New Roman font (12) double spacing
ii. Use APA format fifth/sixth edition for reference
iii. Supplement your answer with maps, charts and diagrams.
2. Late submission will be penalized in terms of marks.
3. The assignment is to be submitted between 4000 to 5000 words (excluding
attachments).
4. Last date of submission of the assignment is November 1/2, 2015.

ASSIGNMENT DESCRIPTION:
1. The objective of this assignment is to understand the regional development with reference
to the structure and process of development of the assigned state of Malaysia.
2. The assignment report will be based on secondary information discussed and analyzed with
due understanding of the facts and supported by references, maps, diagrams, tables etc.
3. The group will attempt to cover the following topics and subtopics covering the present
status and the process of change since independence:
i. Introduction:
1. The term development and its varied meanings and criteria of
measurement
2. The term region and its typology and justifications for the state as a region
3. State level variations in development in Malaysia and incorporation of
regional development planning as a strategy to remove regional imbalances
in Malaysia
ii. The State and its resource endowment:
1. Geographic extent and neighborhood
2. Brief historical introduction of the state
3. Abiotic and biotic resources – Land, water and minerals; forest, livestock,
fisheries etc.
iii. Human resource
1. Population – Number, distribution and growth
2. Population – Composition (gender, ethnic, age, occupation, education)
3. Migration of population

iv. Human settlements:
1. Rural – Villages and new settlement areas
2. Urban – town, cities and metropolitan areas
3. Hierarchy of urban settlements
v. Economy:
1. Primary Sector (Agriculture, forestry, fishing and mining)
2. Secondary sector (Manufacturing)
3. Tertiary sector (services including tourism)
vi. Infrastructure:
1. Motorways, highways, railways, airports and ports
2. Power supply - Petroleum, gas and electricity

vii. Regional affiliation and sub-regions:
1. State as a part of Growth Triangle
2. State as a component part of larger development corridor
3. Sub-regions within the state based on economic development
