Dunavan, Sandra L. “Locavore.” Food: In Context, edited by Brenda Wilmoth Lerner and K.

The section describes the history of food and how it worked in society and then how

things have changed and how people dubbed “locavores” spend time to look for local

foods grown close to their community. It describes the benefits of the locally grown

foods

and how sometimes it is not always better environmentally to eat locally but other

methods such as eating less meat and shopping less frequently. It is a very useful article

in helping people understand the complexity of how produced and locally grown food

affect the environment and how there are many different factors going into what would

be considered better. And perhaps what could be done in someone’s day to day lives

when it comes to shopping for food that would help the environment and themselves in a

healthy way.

The section of text describes various household pollutants in people’s homes as well as

issues caused by the ways homes are made. It includes various tables such as one that

lists everyday household products that have harmful ingredients and what potential health

hazards they may contain. There are also lots of suggestions for alternative methods that

people can use which is helpful in showing people why they should change some

everyday habits and what they can do as an alternative. Plus it is simple to get

information quickly thanks to the use of the tables.

The section of text on waste reduction describes what exactly it is and how it helps

people and the environment. It is not just about recycling but other ways to reduce waste

such as efficiency with using products, donating resources, or reusing products. It also

provides a small blurb on the EPA and how businesses can benefit from reducing the

waste they produce. The entire section does a good job in flushing out what exactly waste

reduction is and the many different aspects that go into it besides recycling as well as

provide alternatives as to what people can do to reduce it. Good for explaining and giving

information.

This section of text goes into statistics of water usage in the United States. It further

breaks up and provides data on that with how much is used for things such as public and

business water usage. Then it continues to describe the average individual percentage of

water usage for the residential water amount. This detail of information is really useful

for providing context on just how much water is used by people every day and would be

very helpful in showing how important it is to conserve or find better ways to use less

water.
