anniversary as a university in Australia. Although a relatively young
university, we acknowledge our long tradition of providing higher

PUTTING

INTO PRACTICE

UWS Solar Car

SOLAR CAR TEAM UP FOR

THE CHALLENGE
The UWS Solar Car team will enter the next World Solar
Challenge to be held in October 2015. The team is
expected to target the prestigious Challenger Class again,
aiming for the top spot in the 3021km challenge.
A new management team, recruited from UWS students, has
been appointed by the School of Computing, Engineering
and Mathematics. Leading the team is Ben Grant, a second
year UWS Engineering (Mechatronics and Electronics)
student with more than 10 years’ experience in his field.
The UWS team is aiming to be the best equipped of
all of the Australian Solar Car teams. For this project
team members will undertake free professional training
provided by the School, outside of their regular studies,
to sharpen their engineering and fabrication skills.
As the UWS Solar Car project team is constantly recruiting,
opportunities exist for all passionate students with an interest
in engineering, science and sustainability. So why not join the
team? You will have the chance to represent the University
against some of the most prestigious universities in the world.

A rapidly developing world needs safe,

pipe networks. Engineers are tapping
into today’s advanced technology to

The Institute is expanding the field
of engineering research beyond
civil and electronic engineering to

OF COMPLEMENTARY
MEDICINE
Local and international demand for
complementary medicine products is
growing at unprecedented rates . Over
80% of the world’s population and two
out of three Australians use some form of
complementary medicine. Australian annual
expenditure is close to $3.8 billion and
growing. Yet this use often occurs without
a full understanding of the effectiveness of
complementary medicine treatments. Many
complementary medicines offer a wealth
of potential healthcare solutions, backed
by hundreds of years of clinical use.
NICM’s research program focuses on the
safety, efficacy and use of complementary
medicine, and employs a diverse range
of disciplines to investigate these issues.
Scientific research into the clinical
efficacy, safety, mechanisms of action
and economic value of complementary
medicine is a relatively new academic
endeavour. It spans the biomedical, clinical,
social, economic and public health fields,
creating a vibrant, interdisciplinary context.
Drawing on its legacy of traditional
knowledge, NICM’s research program
investigates the breadth of interrelated
issues in complementary medicine from
the broad social research perspective
to detailed analysis of the chemical
constituents and molecular effects of
herbal medicines. It addresses the
national research priorities of preventative
healthcare and aged care, and its
activities fall into three streams:

1. Clinical research to validate the

2. Pre-clinical laboratory research on
the identification, bioactivity and
mechanisms of action of herbal

complementary medicine, health policy
development through federal and state
government agencies, development of
clinical practice guidelines, economic
analyses of complementary medicine
usage, and database development,
including the Chinese Herbal
Medicine Toxicology Database.

record for completing high quality trials
that have been published in the world’s
leading medical journals. International
collaborations provide access to the
world’s leading clinical experts and facilities.

This program is designed to bridge this
gap and provide an integrated skills

WHAT WILL BE THE CONDITIONS
OF MY STUDENT VISA?
Student visas and temporary entry permits
usually last for the period of your course.
You must uphold your visa conditions while
studying and living in Australia or your visa
may be cancelled and you may have to
leave Australia. The University is obliged
to report any student to Department of
Immigration and Border Protection (DIBP)
who does not attend class, or who is
not making satisfactory progress in their
studies. You will also be required to keep
the University informed of any changes
to your residential and mailing addresses.
You must also maintain enough money to
pay for travel, tuition, health insurance and
living expenses for yourself, your partner
and dependent children (including their
schooling) during the duration of your stay
in Australia and you will not be able to work
more than 40 hours per fortnight during
academic sessions. Under visa regulations
you are required to leave Australia on or
before the date your visa expires. Please
