Visual and initial Inspection of system

Hazard/risk

1. Electric Shock Hazard from energizing an untested electrical circuit.

2. Injury sustained from being struck by a release of uncontrolled energy.

3. Electric Shock Hazard from inadvertent contact with live parts or undetected voltages

4. Attack from biting insects and vermin, or poisonous plants and animals.

Safety measures

All live electrical parts to be accessible only by the use of a tool.

2. Inspection of Electrical enclosures for evidence of live parts

3. Inspection of fault protection devices and Isolation points

4. Inspection of guards and screens for continuity

5. Inspection of plant for damage that may impair safe operation

6. Inspection of cable support structures

Earth leakage

Hazard/risk

1. Electric Shock Hazard from differential voltage between elements, should an MEN link be
removed.
2. Circuit Protection fails due to poor earthling, resulting in electric shock and equipment damage.

Safety measures

Use of remote earth probes to set up a testing reference point. If the independent earth probe
is used, it should be inserted at least two meters away from the switchboard, or exposed metal
pipework and the electrical worker.

Ladder

Hazard/risk

Falls from ladder/ stepladder

Falling objects
Manual Handling and Slips
Safety measures

Ladders/ Stepladders to be thoroughly inspected annually and visually inspected prior to each occasion
of use.

Working at height regulations applied and follow the HSE guidelines GS 31 on safe use of ladders, steps
and trestles.

Only staff/volunteers trained in ladder use to be given and competency records kept.

Ladder to be securely footed or tied during use. Stepladder to be opened fully & on even ground. Do
not use in high winds.

Do not use ladders to support trestles boards. Carried items to be securely fastened e.g. on tool belt or
shoulder bag.

Footer to wear hard hat (PPE).

Area below ladder to be cordoned off if in public area.

Do not lift heavy/ awkward loads whilst on ladder/ stepladder. Care should be taken when moving/
carrying ladder (2 persons required) or stepladder.

Suitable sturdy footwear (PPE) to be worn with clean soles for grip. Use outdoors prohibited in icy wet
conditions.
