Metro grocery workers vote 97% in favour of strike action

Mississauga, Ontario -- Members of the United Food and Commercial Workers Union (UFCW)
Locals 175 & 633 employed at Metro grocery stores gave their negotiating committee a 97%
strike mandate at meetings held March 19. The agreement covers 6,500 workers at 54 stores
across Ontario.

“Our Members have sent a clear message that they expect the employer to get back to the
bargaining table and negotiate a fair and reasonable collective agreement,” said UFCW Local
175 President Shawn Haggerty.

“With this strong mandate, the Members have shown that they support their negotiating
committee and that they are prepared to take strike action if necessary.”

The Union is seeking dates to continue bargaining with the employer and has requested the
assistance of a conciliation officer from the Ministry of Labour for those meetings.

“The Union continues to pursue a negotiated fair deal with the employer and we hope this action
by the Members will motivate the employer to return to the table to achieve that goal,” added
President Haggerty.

UFCW Locals 175 & 633 is the leading Union for retail and commercial workers, representing
more than 70,000 Union Members, including 37,000 in grocery retail stores across Ontario.
