GSC 300 PRESENTATION DEPT.

COORDINATOR QUESTION SHEET (JUNE 2017)

Purpose: To gather useful information about student department policies and career
opportunities to incorporating in the GSC 300 Advising presentation for Fall 2017.

1. What type of academic or career advice do you give to students the most? What questions
do students regularly ask you and how do you respond to them?

2. Excluding your department website, what information about the department is readily
available for students to read? Are there any brochures or collateral that can be distributed to
me?

3. Where would you guide students who in a job search? Are there any unique positions or
career opportunities within your program that are only available based on level of degree?

4. Do you know any notable alumni who have graduated from your department? Is there any
information we can include about the successes of current students within your department?

5. Are internships a necessary component for students in your program? If so, is there
information about internships that you want students to know outside of the general
requirements?

6. [For Graduate-level] Excluding UNLV and department requirements, what does your
department’s admissions committee “really” look for when reviewing applicants who would like
to enroll in your program? (i.e. specific courses taken, research interests, recommendations,
prior work experience, etc.)

[For Undergraduate-level] What do students need to know or do before graduating from their
program to be well-equipped to obtain a career or apply for graduate or professional school?
(i.e. social involvement, an independent study course, engage with faculty, certain GPA, etc.)

7. Are there any networking events or social organizations that your department encourages
students to learn more about? If so, when and where are these event(s) or organizations? How
am I able to retrieve more information about them?

8. What makes your degree program unique from similar programs at other four-year
institutions? How can students take pride in being an alumni of your department once they
graduate?

[If applicable] How do you advise students who are interested in related programs that may not
be available at UNLV (i.e. Ph.D. that is not available through your department)?

9. Is there any information you think would be useful to include in our GSC 300 Second Year
Seminar presentation that hasn’t already been addressed in the above questions? (Career/grad
school/internships/etc.)
