Microbiological Techniques assessment criteria 1.1

An average Cocus is about 0.5 – 1.0 µm in diameter. Staphylococci is known to cause toxic shock

syndrome(TSS) & MRSA. Streptococci causes sore throat however Not all streptococci are bad: many are

beneficial Streptococcus thermophilusis one of the

bacteria that help turn milk into yogurt. Streptococcus

pneumoniae Is a diplococcus known to cause pneumonia

Gram cocci are know to be responsible for such infections

as Meningitis and gonorrhea.

An average bacillus is 0.5-1.0 µm wide by 1.0-4.0 µm long.

Salmonella is a species of bacillus causing food poisoning

in humans. Escherichia coli is non pathogenic if it is in it’s

normal environment the large intestine, however if it is

allowed to enter other areas of the body it can make a

person sick and can cause E. coli. Black death is caused by

Yersinia pestis.

Spirilla

Spirals range in size from 1 µm to over 100 µm

in length. Species S. minor is a cause of rat bite

fever in humans. The genus Campylobacter

contains several pathogenic species, including C.

jejuni, which causes campylobacteriosis, an

intestinal infection accompanied by diarrhea.

Treponema pallidum causes the sexually transmitted disease syphilis.
