CARL FRIEDRICH GAUSS

PRINCE OF MATHEMATICS

Francisco Bastidas
Universidad del Valle
BIOGRAPHY OF GAUSS
• He was born in Brunswick in 1777 and
died in Göttingen in 1855.

• Since childhood he showed great skill

with numbers.

• At the age of fourteen, Gauss went to

the Duke of Brunswick's court to display
his calculating skills. As a gift, the duke
gave him several math books.
GAUSS WAS RECOGNIZED AS A
CHILD PRODIGY, DESPITE COMING
FROM A PEASANT FAMILY OF
ILLITERATE PARENTS; OF HIM THERE
ARE MANY ANECDOTES ABOUT HIS
AMAZING PRECOCITY. HE MADE HIS
FIRST BIG DISCOVERIES WHILE HE
WAS JUST A TEENAGER IN HIGH
SCHOOL.
WAS A MATHEMATICIAN, ASTRONOMER, GEODESTA AND GERMAN
PHYSICIST WHO CONTRIBUTED SIGNIFICANTLY IN MANY FIELDS,
INCLUDING NUMBER THEORY, MATHEMATICAL ANALYSIS, DIFFERENTIAL
GEOMETRY, STATISTICS, ALGEBRA, GEODESY, MAGNETISM AND OPTICS.

WITH MATHEMATICS HE
CALCULATED THE ORBIT OF THE
PLANET URANUS. GAUSS WAS NOT
SURE OF HIS VOCATION:
MATHEMATICS OR PHILOLOGY; BUT
HE LIKED HIS RESULTS SO MUCH THAT
HE DEVOTED HIMSELF TO
MATHEMATICS.
HE MADE GEODESIC STUDIES AND APPLIED MATHEMATICS TO
GEODESY. TOGETHER WITH THE GERMAN PHYSICIST WILHELM
EDUARD WEBER, HE INVESTIGATED MAGNETISM AND ELECTRICITY; A
MAGNETIC INDUCTION UNIT GETS ITS NAME. HE ALSO RESEARCHED
LENS SYSTEMS AND BECAME INTERESTED IN ASTRONOMY
GAUSS IS CONSIDERED ONE OF THE
MOST IMPORTANT MATHEMATICIANS
IN THE HISTORY OF MANKIND.
HIS SIGN

Appeared on the bill of 10 marks

- the number pi
- signs of integrals
