Small Group Lesson 3226

Jessica Kosco

3/19/18

Area of Literacy: Poetry/ Mood of the poem

Need: The class has been working on a poetry unit and the teacher wanted additional support
for students that are struggling. The teacher had given a lesson similar to this lesson and
noticed students struggling. The students pulled for small group, work better in a small group
setting.

Materials for Teacher: Poem, white board, and poetry chart

Materials for Students: Poem named “Remembering”, poetry chart

Intended Outcomes: Students will complete the poetry chart naming 5 sentences from the
poem with an example of a visual, and the explanation of the mood. Students will work
independently in the group setting.

Results:

 Successes: Students were able to pull sentences from the poem and successfully
explain the mood of the sentence and provide a visual.
 Challenges: Students may find drawing a visual challenging, instead of being able to
write it in words.

Modifications: I would allow students to write their visual in words, as well as, draw it. Students
had to explain their drawings to the teacher any way, therefore it may be easier to write it out
as well.

Modifications to improve student learning: The modifications of allowing students to write out
their visuals, as well as drawing a visual will help the students learning. The student will be able
to explain their visuals by writing out what they drew.
