初見の英文を扱ったReading問題
Ⅴ Read the article, and answer the following questions. (20)
Dear Editor,
1. Read the statements. Choose ① (=true) or ② (=false). (2×5 = 10)
This letter is a response to yesterday’s article, “Online Advertising is Every Business’s Best Choice”, by 29. The writer of the letter, L. C. Arnold, is writing a letter to response to yesterday’s article.
L. C. Arnold. I own my own company, P&W T-Shirts, which sells t-shirts for adults ages 18~25. Based on
my experience, I strongly disagree with Arnold, who writes, “Businesses should forget about advertising 30. The writer of the letter has difficulty in his business.
in newspapers and magazines. Advertising online is the only way to succeed.” This is not true. I paid
thousands of dollars for online ads. But they did not increase my company’s sales. I lost so much money

mistake. Arnold thinks that online advertising is better, but I prefer traditional advertising, such as in
newspapers and magazines. 33. Statistics provided by a website is thought to be reliable.
First, not everyone spends a lot of time online, so some people see very few online advertisements.
Young adults are often online, but the International Marketing Association (IMA) recently reported that
“Older adults are online for 75% less time than younger adults.” So, probably a grandmother buying a 2. Read the statements. Choose ① (=fact) or ② (=opinion). (2×5 = 10)
shirt for her grandson will only see the traditional advertisement. That ad would influence her purchase.
Another reason that I prefer traditional ads is that newspapers more easily get a reader’s attention. 34. Advertising online is the only way to succeed.
Internet users constantly surf, visiting many different websites. It is difficult for your ad to get any

study showed that 90% of young adults do not click on an Internet ad most of the time. They are too busy 36. Every company should think carefully about where they advertise.
looking at all of the other information.
My final, strongest reason to support traditional advertisements is that it is much easier to prove how 37. P&W T-Shirts and other companies should continue traditional advertising.
effective they are. A newspaper can provide statistics, such as the number of people who buy a daily paper,

so you know how many people may receive your advertising message. A website can also provide statistics,
but they cannot be trusted. Many people might visit a website, but we do not know how long they stay
there and carefully read the information. Think about how often you go to a website and immediately
leave, because you clicked on the wrong box.
I think that every company should carefully think about where they advertise. Ads in newspapers and
magazines are read by the most people who pay attention to the ad. Advertisers can get reliable statistics
that prove how many people will be reading that paper or magazine. This is why I believe P&W T-Shirts
and other companies should continue traditional advertising rather than focusing only on online
advertising.
Sincerely,
Paul Workman
Owner, P&W T-Shirts

ReadingとWritingをミックスした問題
Ⅷ Read the article, and answer the following questions. (30)
You’re walking down a busy city sidewalk, and you see someone in front ( 1 ) you fall down. What
would you do? Now imagine the same situation, but you are the only person on the sidewalk. What
would you do then? According ( 2 ) social psychologists, you are more likely to help when there is no one
else around. ( 3 ) the contrary, if there are many witnesses, or bystanders, you might not offer help. It
is even possible that no one would help the person ( 4 ) all. Psychologists believe this is a natural yet
complex human reaction, which they call “the bystander effect”.
Social psychologists John Darley and Bibb Latane set ( 5 ) an experiment with college students to test
the effect. They divided the students ( 6 ) three cases. They put him or her in a room with a TV screen
that showed another person in a different room in the building, and they left. Students in the first case
thought that they were alone in the building. Students in the second case thought that there was one
other person in the building. Students in the third case thought that there were four other people in the
building. As part of the experiment, the person on the TV screen pretended to become ill and called ( 7 )
for help. In the first case, where students believed they were the only people in the building, 85% went
to get help for the person. In the second case, only 62% tried to help. In the third case, only 31% tried
to help. The result figured out that 【 】.
