REFUGEE CRISIS AND MINIMUM WAGE 2

The two global issues that I chose to do research for my paper are minimum wage and

refugee crises.

Q.1

One effective way in identifying and narrowing down a topic is finding my interests.

This can be possible through brainstorming. The researcher can also talk to other people about

the interests. I believe that if someone has a passion and interest about certain topics, he/she can

develop a strong argument that will be more focused to create a well-supported and strong

position.

Q.2

According to Ashbury College (2008), sources can be critically analyzed to establish if

they are credible and scholarly by using accuracy, currency, objectivity, coverage, and the criteria

authority (Ashbury College, 2008). Accuracy means that all data is factual and the evidence

supports the claims. Objectivity means that they the source is not based on opinion but data and

fact. Authority implies that the author’s credentials and are educated in the background of the

topic. In terms of currency, it is crucial that the information is up to date and relevant. Coverage

means where data and information was sourced and whether it is a primary or secondary source?

Q.3

I will be concentrating on the aspect that the Syrian refugee crisis was fashioned by

several countries; therefore the whole global community has a duty to help in any way. The

Syrian refugee crisis is summarized by the article in the journal by Professor Shahram
REFUGEE CRISIS AND MINIMUM WAGE 3

Askbarzadeh and Dara Conduit. Millions of Syrians are seeking refuge in other countries and

there are more than 6 million that are internally displaced in the country. Many external countries

like the U.S., Russia, Turkey, Iran, and Saudi Arabia are actively involved with the crisis within

the country. Most people describe it a proxy war since the countries do not put direct troops into

the country while they are just involved by protecting their own self-interests. The article defines

how it has had a significant effect on children, civilian lives, living conditions, and education.

They also offer some recommendations to assist the refugees by citing an example of how

Germany has resettled more refugees (Askbarzadeh and Conduit, 2016). The second article by

Heide Castañeda and Seth Holmes describe the structure of blame of why the European refugees

are displaced and how different cultures and countries react to them (Castañeda and Holmes,

2016). The article also describes how Europe lacks cohesiveness in matters of dealing with the

refugees. A notable fact is how each country and their media describes the crisis, why it is

happening, and what their effort in tackling the crisis.

Q.4

Scholarly sources should be utilized to support the topic because it provides facts and

quantifiable data that support the claim. On the contrary, using non-scholarly sources would

make the paper based on opinion rather than fact making it weak.
