Optical measuring microscope
Aim: To understand the working of Optical measuring microscope
Equipment Name: STM6-LM
Make: Olympus

Introduction:

The STM6-LM microscopes equipping a 250 x 150 mm stage offer excellent

versatility and high performance three axis measurements of parts and electrical
components, with submicron precision. Low magnification option makes this
ideal for toolmakers.

Operating Procedure:

• Welded specimen is prepared by polishing it

• The specimen is etched after polishing
• The specimen is kept on the table under the lens of optical microscope
• Specimen is adjusted manually to focus lens over the specimen
• After focussing the image received is fine tuned to get clear image
• Lens used are 5X, 10X and 50X
• The images of base metal, weld bead and heat affected zone were
produced
• The system was connected serially with a computer, so that the same
view can be seen on the monitor for better understanding

Results:

The images obtained are as follows

Image obtained from 5X lens
