$1.3 Trillion Federal Budget: The House


Y Y Y Y voted, 256-167, to fund the government
through September at an annual level of $1.3
trillion in discretionary spending, with $700
billion allocated to the military and the rest to
domestic and foreign-affairs budgets. A yes
vote was to pass HR 1625.
Access to Experimental Drugs: The House
Y Y N N passed, 267-149, a bill giving the terminally ill
access to experimental drugs unapproved by
the Food and Drug Administration. A yes vote
was to pass HR 5247, which critics said
would unfairly raise false hopes while
undermining the FDA.
$1.3 Trillion Federal Budget: Voting 65-32,
Y Y the Senate approved a $1.3 trillion budget for
discretionary spending in fiscal 2018. A yes
vote was to join the House in passing HR
1625 (above), which lifts a ban on research
into gun violence by the Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention.
U.S. Military Role in Yemen: The Senate
N N tabled, 55-44, a measure (SJ Res 54)
requiring Congress to authorize the U.S.
military’s role in supporting Saudi Arabia’s
aerial bombing in Yemen. A yes vote was to
kill the resolution on the rationale that U.S.
boots are not on the ground in Yemen.
Online Sex Trafficking: The Senate voted,
Y Y 97-2, to allow Section 230 of the 1996
Communications Decency Act to be used to
prosecute websites that “knowingly” facilitate
sex trafficking. A yes vote was to pass HR
1865 over arguments its broad language
would curb free speech on the Internet.
