ACADEMY Dec 16, 2017 | was Emily Johnson's honors physics teacher last year at the Academy for Math, Engineering and Science (a.k.a. AMES). 1 also taught a robotics class that she took the previous year. | gladly give her my highest recommendation for admission to any school and for any scholarship. ! would rank Emily in the top five percent ofall students Wve taught in my fourteen-year teaching career. | rank her this high not just because of her excellent academic achievements but also because her character is exactly the kind that you would hope all students could have. ‘The thing that impresses me the most about Emily is her willingness to tackle difficult challenges. The honors physics class at AMES is taught at a level that’s equivalent to AP physics in many schools, Emily struggled at first in this class but she didn’t let that deter her. She came in to get help outside of regular ‘lass hours and worked very hard to learn the material. By the end of the year Emily's problem solving and critical thinking abilities had grown tremendously and her capabilities now far exceed that of a typical student, {As for Emily's character, I can confirm from first-hand observation of her in my class that she possesses great confidence, maturity and care for those around her. She never hesitated to come up to the board at the front of the room during class to solve difficult problems, even if she wasn't sure what the solution was as she walked up to the front of the room, She wasn’t shy about working through difficult problems while other students watch. And when she understood things before the rest of the students did, which happened frequently because she is so very bright, Emily was wonderful about helping other students along in appropriate ways. She gave them hints rather than just telling them the answer, ‘which is something that | really appreciated. She was never condescending and she explained things larly, which is something that the other students really appreciated.
