Title: Equivalent Fractions

Grades: 6
Subject/Course: Fractions/ Math
Date: December 4, 2017
Time: 9:00am-9:40am

Lesson Description
This lesson on equivalent fractions will start with asking them what they know about
fractions. Key topics:
1. What is a numerator?- the top number
2. What is a denominator?- the bottom number
3. What is an equivalent fraction?- a fraction that is either simplified or expanded
4. What are two ways of finding equivalent fractions? - multiplying or subtracting by
the same value
Then I will go onto explaining what an equivalent fraction is and in what ways we can
achieve to get equivalent fractions. Then, using examples, I would look at ways to
expand or reduce to get equivalent fractions. Then, students would work in groups of 3 to
differentiate which of the 3 fractions( that I have given them) are equivalent and which
are not. After the discussion, the students will complete a worksheet. Once they are
done, we would take up a few questions from the textbook from page 288-289 (#
1,2,3,6,11).

Purpose (e.g., diagnostic, formative, summative):

DIagnostic- To see how much they know
Formative - To see how well they understand the lesson

Tool(s) (e.g., checklist, marking scheme, rubric, observation, interviews):

The tools that will be used are:
1. Observation

Resources (e.g., equipment, PowerPoint sides, manipulatives, hand-outs, games,

assessment tool):
● Collaborative games and textbook

Accommodations and differentiation strategy

No accommodations necessary
Considerations (e.g., contingency plans re: technology failure or student absences and
groupings, or guest speaker cancellations):
If absent- student can see me during lunch period to go over what was missed or will
have to go over the work on their own
