Research Intern: Transformational Challenges for Sustainable Urban Ecosystems

Terms of Reference

About CEEW:
The Council on Energy, Environment and Water (http://ceew.in/) is an independent, not-for-
profit policy research institution. CEEW addresses pressing global challenges through an
integrated and internationally focused approach. It does so through high quality research,
partnerships with public and private institutions, and engagement with and outreach to the
wider public.

CEEW has been ranked as India’s top climate change think-tank two years in a row
(ICCG Climate Think Tank Ranking). The Global Go To Think Tank Index has ranked
CEEW as
 1st in India among ‘Top Think Tanks with Annual Operating Budgets of Less Than $
5 Million USD’ (2013, 2014 also first in South Asia; 14th globally)
 Ist in India for ‘Best Institutional Collaboration’ involving two or more think tanks
(2013, 2014 also first in South Asia)
 Ist in India for ‘Best Policy Study/Report’ for its study on India’s National Water
Resources Framework (2013)

In four years of operations, CEEW has engaged in more than 70 research projects,
published more than 40 peer-reviewed policy reports and papers, advised governments
around the world over 80 times, engaged with industry to encourage investments in clean
technologies and improve efficiency in resource use, promoted bilateral and multilateral
initiatives between governments on more than 30 occasions, helped state governments with
water and irrigation reforms, and organised more than 80 seminars and conferences.

Designation offered: Research Intern

Job Location: New Delhi, India

Purpose: CEEW seeks to hire an Intern who will assist the research team to carry out work
on analysing issues related to the transformational challenges facing the existing cities and
mega-cities in India. In addition to the duties and responsibilities outlined below, the Intern
should be prepared, as and when necessary, to take on additional responsibilities.

Duration: Two months (Summer Intern)


Job Duties and Accountabilities
 Comprehensive literature review on socio-technical landscape of urban sphere in
India
 Assist conducting sample surveys and interviews to understand urban challenges and
viable solutions to address these with a multilevel perspective
 Analyse primary and secondary data to understand viable solutions, and their
regulatory/ policy and infrastructure requirements
 Prepare a research brief by the end of the internship on what are the possible socio-
technical scenarios for making a transformation to sustainable city/ cities in near-term
and their transition routes
 Assist in planning and organising roundtables, consultations, seminars and workshops
with sector experts

Selection Criteria

 Currently pursuing a Masters or completed their Bachelors degree in Engineering


(Urban Planning/ Resource Management and Planning / Social Sciences/ Public
Policy) or equivalent
 Knowledge and interest in the areas of city planning, sustainable development,
resource management (energy, environment, water) and innovative technology to
improve urban infrastructure and resource use efficiency
 Good quantitative and qualitative skills. Knowledge of Geographic Information
System, Statistical analysis tools (primarily R) and Data analytics would be preferred.
 Excellent written and verbal communication skills
 Proficient in the use of MS Office (Word, Excel and PowerPoint) and comfortable
using new software tools and models
 Ability and willingness to learn, manage multiple priorities, projects and
internal/external resources in a fast-paced environment, while meeting deadlines
 Knowledge of vernacular languages would be an advantage
 Willingness to show initiative in order to handle unforeseen problems
