1. NECESSARY CONDITIONS
a
1.1. MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT
- Balance with precision of 0.01g
lad
- Crucible
- Oven or moisture balance with temperature controller
- Desiccator or appropriate surface to cool the sample
1.2. SAFETY / ENVIRONMENT
ro
- Contact with hot surface. Preventive action: Tongs or heat resistant gloves to take the
sample out of the oven.
- Skin burn: Keep a safe distance, use heat resistant gloves or tongs.
nt
- Soil and water contamination: Return the remaining sample to the process.
1.3. OTHER
- Sample in sufficient quantity
co
- Equipment in good working order
2. ACTIVITIES DESCRIPTION
o
- Close lid and then press the '"START" button to initiate the test.
- The test will be completed when the moisture balance timer stops. Then, record your
results in the appropriate place.
- Discard the residue of analysis according to the residue management procedure.

a
- Check oven temperature - the correct temperature is between 110 - 120 °C
lad
- Check if balance is tared.
- Place the crucible on the balance and record weight in the % Moisture tab of LOI
calculation spreadsheet.
- Tare balance with crucible on it.
ro
- Weigh approximately 15 grams of sample (less for lightweight samples) into the crucible
and record sample weight.
- Place the sample into the oven for 2 hours (using tongs or gloves).
nt
- Remove sample from oven using tongs or gloves and place it into desiccator and allow to
cool for 15 minutes.
- Remove sample from desiccator and place it on balance. Weigh and record the final
co
weight.
- Using the original weights of the sample and the crucible, subtract the total dry weight.
The difference between the two weights is then divided by the sample weight and
multiplied by 100.
- Record the results in the appropriate location.
