Equation: y= x2-10x+24

Business: Yak sellers in Yemen

How to solve by factoring:

Step 1-> make your “X” and find two numbers that
multiply to 24 and add to 10. Those two numbers are 6
and 4.

Step 2 -> now use the zero-product property to solve the

equation:

(x+6) (x+4) = 0

X+6=0 and x+4=0

X = 6 and x = 4 (this means our business broke even the

sixth and fourth year)

Finding the vertex:

step 1-> The x-coordinate of the vertex is (-b/2a) so my x-coordinate is 5. To find the Y-coordinate you
must plug in your x-coordinate into your equation.

Step 2-> 52-10*5+24 so the Y-coordinate is -1

Since my parabola opens downward this means that this business was least profitable five years into the
business when it wasn’t even breaking even.

Explanation of the graph

Why did we want to sell Yaks in Yemen you may ask? We just felt like it. Also, no one had yaks in the
beginning, but everyone needed them, and they didn’t even know it. The business was very profitable in
the beginning because no one had yaks in Yemen but in year five we didn’t make any money because
everyone had yaks and didn’t need anymore. We almost went bankrupt. BUT THEN a terrible yak
disease spread across the land and all the yaks died right in front of our eyes. It was tragic, but our
business was saved. We had extra yaks in the neighboring country of Oman that we were able to sell to
the Yemen’s. By year six we broke even and since then our business has flourished unlike those pointless
goat businesses. Why is a goat business so bad you may ask? THEY ARE NOT THE SUPIRIOR YAKS! Thank
you for your time sorry we got a little riled up right then. Bye, Bye!
