We Will Get You There!

The United States healthcare system is migrating to the use

of the International Statistical Classification of Diseases
and Related Health Problems 10th Revision (ICD-10), for
coding diagnoses and inpatient hospital procedures.

Resources. Solutions. Results.

The United States Healthcare system is migrating
to the use of ICD-10-CM for diagnosis coding and
ICD-10-PCS for inpatient procedure coding.
Transactions for outpatient claims for dates of service and inpatient
claims for discharge date must be submitted with ICD-10 code sets
effective October 1, 2013. Migration from ICD-9 to ICD-10 requires an
organizational overhaul. Healthcare entities must evaluate and re-
view all of their systems, processes, practices and policies. Forward
thinking organizations are reviewing the transition process to ICD-10
as a business improvement opportunity.
The magnitude of change incurred in moving from ICD-9 to
ICD-10 is evidenced in the raw number of codes used expanding from
about 18,000 to 141,000 due to changes in format, syntax and greater
specificity of coded data. Coding and reimbursement practices will
change dramatically in response to this change taking place. Assign-
ing codes that accurately represent the severity and intensity of ser-
vices provided will require a heightened level of detail in provider
care documentation. Reimbursement and service eligibility will also
be impacted by this same set of codes.
Valued benefits will be derived with organizations wisely using the
more granular and specific coding to:

Improve the effectiveness of the care rendered by using the

coded data to improve the care process including disease
management, provider performance, and research for better
outcomes.
Improve the efficiency and accuracy of healthcare administra-
tion by eliminating some of the inefficient review processes
and allowing for enhanced accuracy of reimbursements for
services rendered.
Advance the long-term outcome of care management world-
wide by using the data for global reporting and care compari-
sons as most other developed countries are already use
ICD-10 coding.
Overall, improved reimbursement for medical services
and better fraud detection to curb the escalating cost of
healthcare.
