Cooling curve Experiment

What is the melting point of an unknown solid?

Variables:

Controlled independent dependent

Time, heat heat Temperature of the water

Equipment
A Beaker, Bunsen burner, water, heating equipment(safety mat, gauze, tripod), safety goggles,
boiling tube, thermometer.

Method
We had to heat the water up to 95°C and then record the temperature of the substance every 30
seconds for 20 minutes.

Evaluation
The melting point of the unknown substance is clearly around the temperature of 68°C. the main
problem of our experiment was the fact that we didn’t have a very precise thermometer. For the
rest the experiment didn’t have any weaknesses, everything went well and it was a fair test.

Conclusion
From my graph I can notice that the melting point is around the temperature of 68°C and from
that point onwards the temperature regularly descends by one degree every 30 seconds. The
temperature remains the same between five minutes up to nine minutes, this means that the
substance has been freezing for four minutes.
