Old Masters...Inspiring Leadership for a Lifetime

“My thinking has led me again to a project to which I have

given much consideration over the past few years. For lack of a better
title, I call it the “Old Masters” plan… it contemplates using the
knowledge, experiences, and judgment of Old Masters in behalf of
the intellectual and spiritual growth of a young student…”
-L. W. Wallace, November 16th, 1943

This excerpt from a letter to Dr. E. C. Elliott, President of

Purdue University at the time, marked the conception of what
would become a long-standing Purdue tradition. In December of
1950, under the guidance of founder Richard Freeman, the first
Old Masters program took place. Although changes have been
made in the format of the program over the past sixty-seven years,
the primary purpose has remained the same. The Old Masters
program has continued to provide Purdue men and women with
intellectual, social, and spiritual enrichment on a personal and
informal level. This year, ten outstanding men and women of
diverse professions are attending the three-day program to share
insights with students in classrooms, housing units, and social
gatherings. The goal of the 2017 Old Masters program is, as it
has been since its beginning, to give Old Masters exposure to the
hopes and ambitions of today’s youth and to provide inspiration
to Purdue students as they contemplate their futures beyond
Purdue University’s campus.
