Iraq

Background
Saddam Hussein led a brutal dictatorship of iraq from 1979 to 2003. In 1990, he invaded and
occupied the nation Kuwait for six months until being expelled by an international coalition. In
2003, an American-led coalition invaded iraq and overthrow the Hussein government.

The President
The supreme ruler at the time was Saddam Hussein. He was the President of Iraq from July 16,
1979 until April 9, 2003. He was a leading member of the revolutionary Arab Socialist Ba’ath
Party and then he later also became the leader of the Baghdad-based Ba’athism. This later
brought the party to power in Iraq.

Corruption
According to Transparency International, Iraq has the most corrupt government in the Middle
East and it is described as a “hybrid regime”(between a “flawed democracy” and an
“authoritarian regime”).
Criminal Justice System
The regular criminal justice system consisted of courts of first instance (including magistrate
courts), courts of sessions, and a court of cassation. Juries were not used anywhere in the Iraqi
criminal court system.

The Parliament
The Council of Representatives is the unicameral legislature of the Republic of Iraq. It is
currently composed of 328 seats and meets in Baghdad inside the Green Zone.
