Water is necessary to life. Without water, all living things will surely die. We need water for
drinking, cooking, washing and cultivating our fields.
No one can survive without drinking water. Every day, we drink litres of water. This sometimes
takes the form of soft drinks and soups. Water is often added to dishes when we cook. It is a necessary
ingredient.
Farmers use water to cultivate their fields and to provide drinking water for their livestock. It is a
precious natural resource and a source of energy. When it is converted into steam, it can be used to
operate machines.
Dams are built across rivers not only to generate hydroelectricity but also to create reservoirs
where water is stored to provide for drinking and irrigation.
Since water is so important, we should use it wisely and not waste it.

Mrs Tee : Girls, I would like to know why so few of you use the library.
Norli : Mrs Tee, the library is just not comfortable. It’s too cramped. There is not
enough space for everyone to sit and read comfortably.
Mrs Tee : I see. What about the rest of you? Why don’t you use the library?
Gayanthri : I find that there are not many varieties of books in the library. There are mainly
reference books with very few storybooks. Some of the books are old while
others are torn and tattered. In fact many of the books are out of date.
Mrs Tee : Are there any other complaints?
Sheryl : Yes, Mrs Tee. The library rules are not enforced. Many students make noise in
the library but the librarians don’t reprimand them. Furthermore, when I want to
borrow a book, I sometimes find that it has been borrowed for a long time and
not returned.
Mrs Tee : Thank you for your comments, girls. I will look into this matter.

“Why so long, Cik?” queried Jamal. He had already spent a few sleepless nights thinking
about his bride.
“Because, dear son,” explained his mother, “there’re the invitations, the catering, the
bridal chamber and the bunga telur to be attended to.” Well, he understood about the invitations,
the catering, yes, the bridal chamber (blush), yes, definitely, but the bunga telur? What was that?
He had not anticipated this bunga telur thing. Jamal needed clarifications on the bunga telur
issue. A bunga telur, his sister explained is the thing, in fact the given thing, hosts presented to
guests on the latter’s leave. These were usually hard-boiled eggs. Well, that’s not really a
problem, thought Jamal. What was wrong with that? One could eat the eggs after the feast.
But, to Jamal’s horror, the bunga telur was only part of the whole scene. Jamal’s mother
demanded certain funds with which to finance the arrangements. Jamal then took to making
budget sheets.
