THE CELEBRATION OF THE TENEBRAE

Evening Prayer of Holy Wednesday

Holy Wednesday and Good Friday may be observed with the celebration of the “Tenebrae” or
darkness because these are the days wherein Christians meditate of the gloomy parts of Jesus’ life as he
begins to enter in his Passion and Death. The name of the celebration is taken from its nature, in darkness.
Fifteen candles are lit in the sanctuary and in the course of the prayer, they are extinguished one
by one with the exception of the last. The fourteen candles represent the first generation in the line of Jesus
Christ. They symbolize the prophets who announced the good news of salvation, of repentance, and showed
the way of following God. As they were persecuted and killed, so too are the lights extinguished. The last
candle represents light of Christ that shines amidst the darkness. This celebration reminds the Christian
faithful of how Christ shines and illuminates man’s path in the course of the world’s confusion.
The church lights are turned off. Only the light from the candles illumine the place. The psalms
and canticles would be best prayed in chants, if possible.

+ God, come to my assistance.

Lord, make haste to help me.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit,
As it was in the beginning is now and will be for ever. Amen.

The first candle is put off.

HYMN
When I survey the wondrous cross See from His head, His hands, His feet,
On which the Prince of glory died, Sorrow and love flow mingled down!
My richest gain I count but loss, Did e’er such love and sorrow meet,
And pour contempt on all my pride. Or thorns compose so rich a crown?

Forbid it, Lord, that I should boast, Were the realm of nature mine,
Save in the death of Christ my God! That were a present far too small;
All the vain things that charm me most, Love so amazing, so divine,
I sacrifice them to His blood. Demands my soul, my life, my all.
Or:

The second candle is put off.

Ant. Evil men said: Let us make the just man suffer; he sets himself against our
way of life.
Psalm 62
Peace in God

In God alone is my soul at rest; Pour out your hearts before him
my help comes from him. for God is our refuge.
He alone is my rock, my stronghold,
my fortress: I stand firm. Common folk are only a breath,
great men an illusion.
How long will you all attack one man Placed in the scales, they rise;
to break him down, they weigh less than a breath.
as though he were a tottering wall,
or a tumbling fence? Do not put your trust in oppression
nor vain hopes on plunder.
Their plan is only to destroy: Do not set your heart on riches
they take pleasure in lies. even when they increase.
With their mouth they utter blessing
but in their heart they curse. For God has said only one thing:
only two do I know:
In God alone be at rest, my soul; that to God alone belongs power
for my hope comes from him. and to you, Lord, love;
He alone is my rock, my stronghold, and that you repay each man
my fortress: I stand firm. according to his deeds.

In God is my safety and glory, Glory to the Father and to the Son,
the rock of my strength. And to the Holy Spirit
Take refuge in God, all you people. As it was in the beginning is now
Trust him at all times. – And will be for ever. Amen.

INTERCESSIONS

The Savior of mankind by dying destroyed death and by rising again

restored life. Let us humbly ask him:

Sanctify your people, redeemed by your blood.

Redeemer of the world, give us a greater share of your passion through a deeper spirit of
repentance,
- So that we may share the glory of your resurrection.

May your Mother, comfort of the afflicted, protect us,

- May we console others as you console us.
In their trials enable your faithful people to share in your passion,
- And so reveal in their lives your saving power.

You humbled yourself by being obedient even to accepting death, death on a cross,
- Give all who serve you the gifts of obedience and patient endurance.

Transform the bodies of the dead to be like your own in glory,

- And bring us at last into their fellowship.

The fourteenth candle is put off.

At the Savior’s command and formed by divine teaching, we dare say:

Our Father
Who art in heaven
Hallowed be thy name
Thy kingdom come
Thy will be done
On earth as it is in heaven
Give us this day our daily bread
And forgive us our trespasses
As we forgive those who trespass against us
And lead us not into temptation
But deliver us from evil.

PRAYER

F
ather,
in your plan of salvation
your Son Jesus Christ accepted the cross
and freed us from the power of the enemy.
May we come to share the glory of his resurrection,
for he lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever.

Amen.
If a celebrating Priest is present, he gives the final blessing:
