Ok all,

I have started a separate Carnage Canyon 2017 thread, so we don't hijack

this thread any longer

Re: Ultimate Trail Master

The alure of attending Carnage canyon has side tracked this tread a little ,
fortunalt a new tread with all the details has been started for those that
wish to join.
Can we now get back to entering Ultimate trail master? 4/5 guys have
entered their 50 trail drives , i have entered xtremos , and the 50 trails ,
although not updated as yet( manny sick in bed)
Come on guys ,enter , its 50 bucks to list your 50 trails drived in your 4x4
carear , yes it takes a bit of thinking as you can only name a trail once even

if you have driven it a 100 times, i read Flips list and thought Manny got
things wrong , mixed mine up with his as lots of the trails posted was a
match to the ones I have driven ,
Take a chance and enter one of the extreme tests , its you and your
machine agains nature and if you conquor them all have some bragging
rights , even if its just a mention under your forum name .
An idea like this has to be driven by the members , the organiseres can
only do so much and then its seems to them that they have to start licking
asses to get people to commit, and that they dont want to do, then the idea
dies a silent death.
Put your name on the bourd and join a event that couls be huge fun and
above all big adventure, you did not buy a 4x4 to go show off at the mall,
get it ditrty , drive it like you stole it , above all enjoy it for what it is a 4x4
.

lowrange gedoen...

Yip, afstand is niks. Ek geniet my voertuig, geniet om te ry, sal maklik

4000km in n naweek doen. Tyd is alles. As jy jouself 15 dae n jaar gee,
moet mens mooi dink tussen familie vakansie en 4x4 pret...

I was off sick for 7 days & have just caught up with reading of this Thread.

Glad we finally have a Thread, purely for the 4x4 enthusiast - no Garden
Ant, Pool Care or Cooking Tip natter here.;D

Also glad the Extreme guys are getting organised.

BUT! If a lot of guys are coming up for Carnage Canyon, we should try
arrange that they knock off some of the other Extreme events at the same
time.
It's not like they can be expected to make numerours trips.
However, If it's just Reenen, then we can maybe get him up her later in the
year for Rhino Challenge etc.

wrt Dos Sete Diablos - I'll start promoting that later in the week...

Still think the most extreme 4x4 I did was building overhead lines. Needed
to make our own roads and Bundubasing all day long. I have tested the
limits of Unimog`s, Samil 50`s and Land Cruisers during that phase of my
life. Still to this day believe very few things can beat a Mog in rock
crawling.;D;D

Come trail driver , get your list together and enter , You need not have
proof of every trail driven before you can submit , submit your list and then
Manny will go evaluate the list and if he is not convinced he will ask you to
provide him with proof that you have done the selected trails , if you have
the proof then he will list your on the tread , and you will get the
acknowledgement . easy peasy , I am aware that listing 50 trails does
become a problem somewhere after 35 as it is one trail listed not driven ,
some guys go out to the same play area every weekend , but you can only
list it once .

Cinquenta Challenge:

I'm on 39.
I'll be doing The Gorge & Bass lake soon.
In May I do a new Trail through the Bridgestone Challenge.

Hope to hit 50 by September.

Dos Sete Diablos:

I have a vague plan which I'll finalise soon.

Will do 3 of the 7 this year... maybe 4.

Will do the balance next year.

Cento Extremos:

The 5 extreme trails were specifically chosen because a vehicle like Fearless
cannot do them.
They are for your more modded vehicles (Modded Rubi's etc).
So Cento Extremos is not for me.

Come and visit me soon. I have a SFA and a set of 35`s workshop. Will just
take a grinder and enlarge the mudguards to take the 35`s with a six inch

extreme trials.
If you feel you have to less power for the 35`s we can slap in a D4D

This needs to be arranged as Rhino Challenge is closed.

It seems the biggest issue here is not the number of trails or obstacle
courses but the evidence required for proof. Most to these were done by
guys who wanted to have fun, to enjoy themselves and to see some
awesome places. They probably did not think of designing the evidence to
proof the happening.

Re: Ultimate Trail Master

Enter and post your list , then Manny will pic some of the trails from the list
in order for you to supply the proof . The way I see it is if you say you have
done Baboons pass , and you drive a 4x4 that you own that is capable of
doing Baboons he is not going to ask for proof , drive a Pruis he will want
the proof .
We played around the Chimes mine dumps for nearly two years , plenty
trails their but I could only list it once , same as Hennops , DeWILT , Groen
kloof , guys go out to these places regularly , but you can only list it once.
Manny started this post to get guys involved , If you are short a trail or two
to add your name to the " done 50 list " then go out and do so . but it
seems that its easier to come up with an excuse as to why I cant post my
50 trails list because I dont have all the proof that actually listing it .
Come on guys , lets be honest , these days its way easier to sit behind the
keyboard and bemoan the state of affairs than getting off our backsides
and go do something. IF ITS NOT THE POSSIBLE DAMAGE TO MY VERY
EXPENSIVE 4X4 THEN ITS FUEL COSTS , or kids in school / varsity . we can
always find excuses not to do something , finding a reason to do it very
hard .
We are all part of this Forum as the "sport " is in our blood , we enjoy it .
So why is it so difficult to actually go out and do so ?
Yes I have a modified Rubicon , to replace it with a new one with mods will
be over a BAR. But I did not buy it to go to the Mall , I have it for
adventure . to go offroad , see that amazing place that can only be reached
by 4x4 .
Am I the ultimate trail master , no I dont think so but would like to be
counted as one of them because I believe that I have the skill and
dedication to be counted . I have mentioned it before , I dont believe that
this forum with all its members have only 7-10 guys that could be Trail
masters , or is the slep of posting up the list just one to many and could
not be bothered ?

I think that is everyone`s problem. I did many trails that I have no proof
of. Wanted to add one particular trail to my list.
Could not find any pic`s which I was 100% sure I do have. So I excluded it
from my list. Only to find the pic`s on my external hard drive while looking
for something else yesterday.

Still the most hardcore 4x4 I did was while building overhead lines. On one
such an occasion I hooked the conductors behind the Mog and went down a
very steep incline. When I reached the bottom I realized I was in a trap.
With all lockers on the Mog made it to the top again. Lots of slipping sliding
bouncing over boulders. To this day I do not believe another 4x4 would
have made that trip. If only we had phones with decent cameras back
then.;D

En baie plekke waar ons ry is nie eens n "roete" nie.

Ek het nie my 4x4's gekoop vir roetes nie. Die 4x4 waarmee ek die meeste

strawwer 4x4 werk by my in berge waar bitter min saam met hom sal loop.

Very valid and true statement. In my case I just did not do the required
number (lots of repetitions on Bonniedale, Vleesbaai, Kleinkranz, even
Berakah). And I had the privilege to spend two days in the Empty Quarter
in the UAE with a Ford Explorer.

I will get to maybe 10 or 15, but the qualifying number of 50 will take quite
a number of years for me. I really do not qualify now.

I think that there is a lot of guys out there that have done more than 50
trails / overlanding trips. Thinking of it a few names comes to mind. I want
to add something but think Oom Dirk is going to hammer me>:D>:D

I plan to do the Seven Devils. Even bought another 4x4 that is more suited
to the tighter trails. Yes Many it does have a better turning circle than the
Yank Ranger.;D;D

Hope to invade Gauteng/North West early sometime next year and see if I
can add some of the famous trails behind my name.

Do not think there is any dune trail left in the NC that I have not done.

We are both just past 42.

Dos Sete Diablos

Su-SWYS-ki is way ahead, he has done:
Koos se Klim at Moegatle.
Moolmanshoek.
He also did Carnage Canyon up to Dead Dog Gorge.
Carnage is NOT on the Sete Diablos list, but I've allowed it as a substitution
& I was there to verify he made it.
It is on the Cento Extremos list, so since he did 85%, I felt it's justified.

Grips & Malkoppie will start their 7 Devils challenge next year.

Cinco Extremos
The very first event of the 5 Extreme Challenges was last weekend.
Carnage Canyon.
Due to the water flow THIS YEAR, I've allowed them to add Carnage as
long they got as far as DDG (Dead Dog Gorge).
Ordinarily you'd need to do the next 600m & get to 'The Beach'.

About 5 entrants, including Mrs LREX, made it - so Cento Extremos is now

Deon I plan to do a road trip next year sometime that will include
Briekmerk.

On this thread and the idea to have certain 4x4 categories which I think is
a very excellent idea right from the start.
What I cannot believe is the lack of interest.

4/1/2018 Ultimate Trail Master

If I read the many threads here about 4x4 trails, overlanding and even
extreme trails one would think that 4x4Community is for the
diehard 4x4 enthusiast. I am slowly changing my view on this. Looks like
everyone wants a 4x4, want his name connected to 4x4 activities or even
better brag about his 4x4 and his activities.
The more I think about it here are very few that are getting dust on their
4x4`s.

I see this lifted big wheel 4x4`s in town every day. I am part af all 4x4
groups in the area. You never see these 4x4`s on outings.
Now the question how much for real and how much for show.

Re: Ultimate Trail Master

Christo , (grips) think I have your name right , I think that fact could be the
guts of a new thread , But I have to agree with you , very few hardcore 4x4
guys left over. A lot of buyers with the bucs take their new toy to have it
pimped to the max to be able to show it off in the mall , they not going to
take their million buck pimped toy out to go play in the dust , are you craze
mad or both .
I had a chat to Shane JKA a while ago and he confirmed it o me , they have
many customers at ZONE that have the most insane rigs built , but not
keen to use them . To me its the same as the guys that own Porsche and
Ferrari , parked in a garage covered with a specail cover just to say he has
one , to scared to drive it , could get a scratch on it .
Aaaagg , to each his own , Even Manny told me I am part of a dying breed ,
most newbys are very keen keyboard offroaders , but not keen to go off
road .

So I am one of those okes that own a 4x4 but are too #### scared to take
in on any track or road that is mildly intimidating. This is also my daily
runner and our long distance vehicle. But looking at the lists of al the
trails/tracks/roads some of the guys did, I can probably get up to 10 or 15
out of the 50. Hopefully I'll be able to add a few more this new year. Funds
are just always a problem, and unfortunately I can fork out a few thousand
rand every now and then to repair damages. But man would I love the
adventure. Maybe it becomes easier when the kids get older.

Re: Ultimate Trail Master

With careful driving, and being sensible you should be able to drive most
regular (note regular) trails without damage, as long as your ego does not
take over and you prepared to take an escape route where unsure. (I think
ego and being silly is probably the biggest reason for vehicle damage). This
is also where training plays a big role. Know your vehicle and limits and you
should be fine.

Interesting story:

As you know - I have little regard for the Trail owners of South Africa, only
De Wildt & Alex of Moegatle have any customer focus & business acumen

I decide to use the last Saturday of 2017 to do my 53d event so that I

could become a UTM before 2018.
I also wanted the 10th spot overall.

I chose Bass Lake as it is one of the few trails nearby that I haven't done. I
check their Website & FB page - all looks good, I send an online enquiry
just to check they are open.
It's last Thursday & I want to go Saturday.
I needed some company, but it's a bad time of year & of course, it's very
short notice.
I invite 78 odd people via Whatsapp.
About 9 respond but there are a few questions - I go back to their web
page & there is now a big RED pop up notice saying they are closed! :o

I then contact Heidelberg - not easy as they don't have proper details, I
send a mail AND I SMS the cell number.
I get no response so I contact Michael of Diggers Hole. He says they are
closed, but he'll open for a group of 6 - 8 (we were eventually 9).

Heidelberg replies saying they are open. I say cool how much? Guy replies
saying R200 a vehicle & R30pp.
So I reply asking if that means a vehicle with a driver & passenger is then
R230 - he snaps back "No! I said R30pp, so it's R260!".

Well firstly - Why have an amount of R200 if I can never pay R200 until
driverless 4x4's are launched?
Since every vehicle will have a driver, just say R230 + R30 per additional
person.
Next, R260 for 2 people is a rip off for that 3 hour trail.
Some of the guys are bringing kids making it around R300
If he had any business acumen he's say R250 per vehicle.

Diggers Hole charges R200 per vehicle - finish & klaar. This multi layered,
convoluted, difficult pricing strategy has got to go!

Anyway - we went to Diggers hole.

4/1/2018 Ultimate Trail Master

Hi guys so after taking a break from the forum, I am slowly coming back.

Here are the details of the challenges.

Vehicle. PANDA
2012 Jeep JK(2dr) Rubicon
33" tyres
2 inch bds/fox suspension.
Advanced front and rear bumpers.

So to start off here is a summary of the events.

1. Moolmanshoek...... Closest

Here I was fortunate that we had a "mannekamp" and the Saturday's

activity was some 4x4.
I did the trail the previous year with my Jimny, so Sampie(the horse guide)
was not going to let me off easily. It was one hell of a scenic trail with some
moderate obstacles. It was really a fun outing.
The challenge was with the Sandstone...... it is brittle in some places and
then you lose traction like you can't believe. The wet sand stone was even
worse. Another hidden problem was grass patches; growing on the
sandstone their roots can't go very deep, so once you land on them they
pull out or the roots rip off.

2. Koos Se klim .... Moegatle

What an experience.....to be really honest it was the car and not me....
engage both lockers, 1st low, point and crawl.............up you go.
Down is a different story, even flat on the brakes it still slides forward so
the trick was not to lock the wheels but to do a controlled descent.

3. Carnage canyon......crap just got real

Rocks, wet rocks, rocks and sand, rocks followed by bigger rocks and no
facilities whatsoever. No toilets, water or power(awesome).

This was very very technical and made you gatvol of klippe.... Get the
perfect line and whoops you slide off a wet rock. Ask oom Sakkie and Neon
Deon.
I made it to Dead Dog Gorge and back to the campsite. It was a great
event.

Not to be taken on with 33" tyres and 2inch lift. Damage was plentiful. I
even managed to bend a ratchet strap that holds the spare wheel steps for
the roof rack, while on the wheel.
The rock sliders, bumpers and standard underbelly took the brunt of the
nocks.... and then the steering damper, that was actually hiding a few
issues with my suspension. So I met with mr Death Wobble all the way
back to JHB. It was thereafter that I became good friends with Corne from
Zone. I had to replace almost the whole front suspension. Its was more to
do with a lack of torque services on the suspension that some brackets had
elongated holes and needed to be welded up.

4. Briekmerk.... AT se gat.

I did this with the 4x4 Action group. Nerves were high for this one; the last
time I was there was with the first event after the Late Master Willie tried it
on one wheel, be it the spare.

Before me went a 2dr Sahara that made a mess of the obstacle getting
stuck for 45 min, this did not go well with the nerves.
So I strapped in and Anthony Forgey guided me. It was a breeze, the
Rubicon does it without any hassles.

I must admit this obstacle is NOT as it use to be...... it became a lot easier
than it use to be. On the first event Flip with his Jimny took a while to get
up, being the most experienced Jimny driver I know. Now a few near stock
Jimnys have conquered the obstacle.

SO ENTER 35" Tires, Cut Flares and small adjustments to the

suspension.

Ultimate Adventure Swaziland........ what a flippin AWESOME trip. On route

back home...... NO 5.....

5. Hells hoogte............. 3 provinces

THIS WAS BY FAR THE WORST ONE.

We first came from the top and did it down..... Not too bad but a lot of
loose rock... We got to the bottom and deflated more to 0.8 with no issues
with clearance...Turned around and up we went.
Drove sliding to the steps on top, and tried going up a few times but kept
losing traction on that step, even with both lockers on. When the right front
starts to lift the left rear just gives way on the loose rocks. A few bumps
later I decided to gun it a bit, it worked but lifting the right front wheel with
a slope downhill to the left...... not fun in the end, but got up and drove
back to camp.

6. Baboons pass.

Went with the Nissan patrol club. I was told a lot of stories of how they
were going to tow the Jeep, make it bigger etc...........We started the trail
at 9am and finished by 4:30pm. It was intimidating but not difficult with
35"s doing their job...

After the weekend 2 quotes remained: " I am never following a Jeep down
to a waterfall again"(Alex) and "Follow the Jeep they said, it would be fun
they said" (my wife)

7.Brakkeduine.

Went so see the in-laws in PE, but bailed for a day and went to finish the
Challenge. It was very interesting, especially as it was my first time playing
on sand. I made my name arse after getting stuck in 4h. I could not get
out, Choppie came to have a look and the dumbass that I am, I had shifted
in to 2h instead of 4L to get out:rolleyes:. Corrected the error, into 4L and
Panda was on the move again.

Langbult was a hell of a challenge, did it after a few attempts.

The roller-coaster was really fun driving on 0.4 bar that was...
