Persuasive Speech – “Honesty is the Best Policy”

Due: _________________ Speeches will take place during the week.

Use the All Write book for help, starting at page 289.

A persuasive speech tries to convince listeners to agree with you about something. In this
case, you are trying to convince listeners to agree that honesty is the best policy.

Steps to planning your speech:

Since your topic and type of speech is pre-picked, you need to begin gathering ideas. See
page 291 for help.

1. Think of an interesting beginning. You may begin by asking a question to your

listeners.
For example: “If you found a wallet on the street, would you try and find the owner, or
keep it? If you answered that you’d turn it in, you are an honest person.”

You may also begin your speech by using a famous quotation or common saying:
For example: "I've had a wonderful time, but this wasn't it."
- Groucho Marx (1895-1977)
You could use this quote, funny as it is, to begin your speech. You could go on to say
how being honest isn’t always easy, and it is sometimes hard, but in the end, the truth is
better told.

2. Put your ideas in order. See page 292. Write your speech on note cards. The
beginning should be written word for word. Then write the main points on separate
cards.

3. Think of a good ending. Don’t just say “That’s it” or “There’s nothing more to say.”
Be creative. Remember, this is the last chance you get to convince your listeners. Repeat
the main idea of your speech.

*** There is no time limit on this speech. It should be longer than 30 seconds and shorter
than five minutes. I want you to write a strong speech, with 3-5 points to convince your
listeners.
